The mysterious death last week of a prominent critic of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in Washington’s West End neighborhood, coupled with the recent car bomb attack on a Putin ally, is drawing fury from some of the Kremlin’s best-known global detractors.

Will this pressure speed up the removal of President Putin to make way for a new President?

Although officially the next in line behind Putin would be Dmitry Medvedev, who has been serving as the deputy chairperson of the Security Council of Russia since 2020. 

However, a former KGB comrade of Vladimir Putin's, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev could be selected as the most likely candidate to take the Russian president's place in power, according to the former head of British intelligence. 

Back in February 2018 Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, paid a working visit to Bangkok. 

He was received by H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. Mr. Nikolai Patrushev also held meetings with H.E. General Prawit Wongsuwon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand and H.E. General Wanlop Rugsanaoh, Secretary-General of the National Security Council of Thailand.

Mr. Nikolai Patrushev and General Prayut Chan-o-cha discussed a broad range of issues in the Russian-Thai relations with a focus on interaction in enhancing international and regional security.

So at least the Thai government has had dialogue before.

As reported by Business Insider, speculation over a possible Putin replacement has been a topic of conversation recently due to a variety of news that the Russian President’s health could be in decline. 

Kremlin insiders and Russian society have even behind closed doors have discussed what would happen if Putin were forced out over the Ukrainian invasion or succumbs to a hypothetical illness.

Sir Richard Dearlove, who served as head of the UK's Secret Intelligence Service from 1999 to 2004, claimed that the most likely heir candidate is Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia's Security Council and a longtime Putin ally known to be one of the exceedingly few officials to have the president's trust.

The former MI6 chief has previously theorized about Putin's likely longevity.

Dearlove has been known to predict that Putin could be forced into a medical facility for long-term illness in an effort to remove the president without a coup.  

The Kremlin has strenuously denied that the President is suffering from any health issues, and Putin himself said in June that such claims were "greatly exaggerated." 

Over in the States, CIA Director William Burns this month also dispelled rumors about the state of Putin's health, saying "as far as we can tell, he's entirely too healthy." 

But questions do remain, and Patrushev's emergence as a dependable front man are gaining momentum
A spokesperson for the Russian Security Council brushed aside that Patrushev is seeking any advancement.
Still, it seems experts consider Patrushev a man to watch. 

But whether Patrushev or any other selected replacement would last, is another question entirely, the experts said.

And would the Russian foreign policy remain, and could we hope for in a new President with a more peaceful attitude?

We will just have to watch this space.

On the other hand, the main theme of the article is germane to discussions of Thailand.  Who comes after?  or what difference will it make if X or Y becomes the nation's leader.

But  when one looks around and observes some of the dumbos in office all over the shop, you can see that governments worldwide are all cut from the same cloth.  [They differ only in the extent of brute force used to enforce law and order.]

The point of a government's existence is to exercise power, the longer the better, no matter how.  Just look at how the pandemic was "managed".  Worldwide.    The one consistent theme has been: "do as you're told, not do as we do"; obey the regulations, they are "mandates".  You can all fill in the blanks here....

It depends on whether Putin's successor subscribes to the same insanity of restoring the Soviet Union to its former "glory".

Hopefully a pragmatist, any Russian with two brain cells would realize withdrawing from Ukraine, and restoring normal relations with the rest of the world, would be a win for Russia.

He will not fall ill. The way the universe seems to work is that truly evil, malicious, dishonest and malignant man and women do not seem to encounter bad fortune, get sick or die. It seems to be part of the universal game, to keep them alive and secure. A sad reality indeed.

It would seem that Mr. Putin will not live to old age if the special operations in Ukraine kills off way too many Russian soldiers. I can not imagine that all the people of Russia will stay silent and supportive if they lose a million of their young men and women in this invasion of Ukraine.  That is my 2 cents worth of opinion.

Simply who the ----   wrote such title and article ? 

 

Mikhail Gorbachev had fallen ill and subsequently passed away in late Aug 2022. 

The writer of this article might be so outdated and confused about Gorbachev and Putin.
