Two Sattahip district officials nabbed for allegedly taking bribes

An assistant chief officer and a local administration official in Sattahip District of Chon Buri province were caught on Friday allegedly taking a bribe from a guesthouse operator, in exchange for granting a license to operate.

 

The operator of the Pool Villa guesthouse lodged a complaint with anti-corruption police claiming that, when he recently applied for a license for his guesthouse at the Sattahip District Office, he was told that if he wants the license quickly he has to make a cash donation by putting money in an envelope and dropping it into a Red Cross Society donation box.

 

He claimed that he had to pay 15,000 baht for each unit in his guesthouse and that the donation box did not belong to the Red Cross Society, but was mocked up by the extortion gang to give the impression that the cash was not bribe money but a donation.

Both suspects have denied that they took a bribe from the guesthouse operator.

 

Deny everything as a misunderstanding Thaiand, even when the money is in your pocket !!

Not sure why this is a story. Recently purchased 1 rai in Issan and seller needed the rai sub divided from larger plot. Money required for head of line service.

They obviously didn't share the donation with the Police Red Cross Society. The whole thing stinks.

So they wanted 15,000 for each unit of the guest house and I’m wondering for how long do these officials collect extra money from all the people who just went ahead and paid this officials are making so much money under the table it’s disgusting corruption runs wild here in Thailand TIT

It is a perfectly normal and expected part of Thai culture to be dishonest. And in this case even the collection box was a fake. Of course, corruption by officials isn't just a Thai thing but endemic in many Asian countries. Strangely, it doesn't exist in the most prosperous countries in the region. There's a message there somewhere...

Restores my faith in Corruption happening after reading a article in the Pattaya mail where bar owners were saying it does not happen ????

It seems becoming a civil servants is a fast track to bribe and corrupt.

Of course bar owners say it doesn't happen.. well the ones that want to stay open anyway.
