True Move mobile phone tower collapses in Lopburi - thieves stole metal and nuts

A police investigation is underway after a True Move mobile phone tower collapsed onto the parking lot of a hotel in Lopburi, central Thailand.

 

Five vehicles were damaged at The Charlotte Smart Hotel.

 

A million baht's worth of damage was done as the 30 meter tall tower toppled over yesterday.

 

Police suspect that at least two people had stolen metal and loosened nuts that they took to sell that led to the collapse, reported Thai Rath. 

 

They are examining tools at the scene for DNA to get a lead in the case.

No mention of what "metal" was stolen but nuts would be low value steel. In the UK there has been a huge problem with cable theft for the more valuable copper content. Wouldn't be surprised if that becomes a thing here. In the UK the authorities imposed rules on scrap metal dealers requiring ID and recording all purchases and only sending payment into bank accounts (rather than cash) for scrap meatl transactions.

We're building on a new property in Ratchaburi.  The construction people told use to use aluminum wire to run along the street.  They said if you use copper someone would probably steal it.

Some years ago I consulted to Electricidade de Moçambique and they had a problem of their towers being blown up and melted down into cooking pots. Putting security guards on each tower was not feasible but with lateral thinking they minimised the problem. ECM opened scrap metal collection points where itinerant people were paid for the metal they collected from the vast amount of wrecked civil war equipment littering the country and those who were making cooking pots had a reliable and legal supply. A virtuous circle of supply and demand ensured employment and also war damage clearance at very low cost to ECM. A great example of applied intelligence.
