Warning to all dog owners in Thailand after a recent pit bull attack and other serious incidents

we have 3 dogs 1 was given to us(a bang kaew) and 2 that were dumped, one was only a day or so old when found, th other was around 6 months old. They stay in our property unless we walk them on leashes, they bark at everyone that comes anywhere near our property(outside of city) and are only out of their pen(8 mtrs x 4.5  mtrs) for a couple of hours morning and afternoon , more on weekends. We have wandering dogs from people that live near us and recently found a pup that was only a few weeks old crying at our gate, it came out of a palm oil property(stray), it is now with the MIL at our other house, trouble is many thais dont really care about their animals nor feed them properly. When we do anything at our land we get another young dog that lives near us running to come and play with us, it is loaded with ticks and always starving (we occassionally feed it), this is what most thai owned dogs look like unfortunately, there needs to be laws brought  in that dog owners have to take full responsibility for their animals and anyone found not doing so to face big fines but then no one would enforce it because that woud require people to actually do their jobs and work.

Obviously they need to be banned. When they become soi dogs better people don't go out

  • Obviously we can't take this message seriously in a country with more soi dogs than people. You'd think they'd take all those dogs off the streets but no.. Too much work for these lazy tarts. Tough la

Around our village people dumping puppies on a monthly basis. Government doesn't do anything

The government is staffed by the people from the village so obviously we get nowhere. No easy fixes here without replacing the government with people from another culture.

I've been bitten by a dog twice, and both times, the owners said the dog wasn't theirs; but I saw them feed it every day, then leave it to roam the soi.

Most Thais have a dog as a must-have accessory when they buy/rent a house, but they won't take responsibility for it.

I have 2 dogs.  I take them out twice a day, and pick-up their mess.  But I'm the only person in the village that does that; if I just let my dogs out on their own, my ears would be burning permanently.

They can be very social animals if they have the right owner. You want to kill a breed because there are idiots who can't take care of them?

Well either eliminate the dogs or their owners. Take your pick.

I'd like the authorities worldwide to wipe out all fighting breeds. They're killer dogs, bred to be ferocious. If I wanted a dog as a pet, I would get a breed known for its gentleness. Only headbangers own killer dogs, they think it makes them look hard.

The way to find the owner is if you happen to cause injury to it! Then it becomes the much loved family pet! I am rather negative wrt dog ownership... not a day goes by that I am not disturbed by one of my neighbours dogs going at it...many nights sleep too!

Should be banned worldwide as they are a bred predator.

When not if they attack someone should be euthanasia immediately.

Why 75%? Where I come from there are no strays. All dogs must be microchipped.

75% is reasonable here in y opinion... indeed better is no stary dogs at all, but here there are too many even the dogs which are living in or near a temple.... if you see some dogs they are sick and covered with wounds and nobody takes care of them.. If the Thai people believe the dogas are reincarnaited maybe family members maybe a even more reason to end their misery..

perhaps a licencing system might help solve the problem.......or pit bulls be chipped!!!????

I wonder if she really jumped for those wings.

At the very minimum, these types of breeds should be muzzled when taken out.

For misguided Buddhist reasons

I have been told as Buddhists believe in reincarnation they must be kind to dogs as they might come back as a dog.

Yes we got a Thai lady goes round the village doing the same

We have the same problem here.  One woman even feeds the dogs locked up in the garden, no chance of getting out.

Absolutely, kill all of them before they kill.

That’s the problem the world is too full of idiots to allow the breed to exist safely with human beings. It’s not the dogs fault it’s just being what it’s bred to do but it’s the idiots who own them that cannot keep them under control. Let’s face it, why else would you keep such a breed of dog? To show off? Give yourself the appearance of being tough or cool (aka an idiot)? If you want a loving dog well that’s every dog isn’t it so you don’t necessarily need a pit bull to satisfy that urge. If you must own this type of dog and it ends up hurting, maiming or killing someone the owner should be held accountable to the extent that they did it themselves and prosecuted accordingly and the dog destroyed immediately, which if you loved it might focus the owners attention on avoiding this outcome. This would go a long way to ensure only responsible owners end up keeping them. If my child was mauled or killed the owner would be far safer behind bars…forever!

Soi dogs and RTP are the biggest turn off for potential tourists.  Get  rid of both and the Banana Republic tag will go away.

I agree with this. Dog owners should be held responsible for any damage their dogs do. And, I think if "soi dogs" (dogs without owners) do damage, they should be either captured and relocated, or, if the damage is severe, like injuring other humans (or other dogs, etc.) they could be "put down."

I don't buy-in to the popular notion that any particular breed of dog is prone to violence. Obviously, a pit bull or German shepherd is more dangerous than a chihuahua, but that's because of their physical build, not their mentality. Thinking that different breeds of dogs have more of a disposition for violence is like having racist views about humans.

And what I don't agree with is many people's suggestion that all "soi dogs" be "put down." If they are not causing severe damage, like injuring humans or other animals, and are just considered a "nuisance," they should be captured and relocated.

Let me get this straight - you want to ban a bred (which needs to be evaluated) by shooting them and all soi dogs? Yet your means of killing them in fact needs to be highly controlled if not banned outright…

Yes, but for some other reasons too.

I heard Charles Manson was very sociable too....

What an idiotic statement! We live in a country where they often show scant care of their pets, dumping them when they become too problematic. If these genes become more prominent in the soi dog population we are in for dangerous times.

Kill all humans then too, they murder the most.

No, as there are many nutters who own guns and are properly trained.

Thai law imposes duties on the owners of dogs to keep them under restraint at all times.

It has happened many times by this type of dog or other types, but I have never seen any serious action by law against the owners of those "monsters", even though after killing some elderly or kids.
How many more need to be killed to push the law to open eyes and see what's happening !!!!! ????????????

We have heard this before. ????????????

I live in a quiet soi with 12 soi dogs and one owned dog running about 24 hours a day. Other than the 11.00pm howl and the occassional scuffle between themselves the dogs are harmless, most of them running away from humans, even those of us who see and feed them each day. In 3 years in Thailand the only time I have had problems with dogs they have been owned dogs. Bitten by a lab cross that got out of the gate to the property, attacked by a Rotti that jumped a garden wall to get at me and, most recently, attacked by a collie cross that lives in the next soi as I was cycling by. It is definitely an owner problem if these dogs attack. I have had, trained, and worked with many breeds and 9 times out of 10 it is how the owners train and treat the dogs that leads to them becoming aggressive. And as for the breed being dangerous, my ex wife had a Ppillon that attacked a copper in the UK. Hardly a dangerous breed but when she refused to walk or train it the dog became terrotorial and aggressive towards strangers.

Start by licensing dogs and licensing breeders. Soi dog foundation and other charities to a good job of neutering soi dogs but dog owners should be made to do the same. If you are not a licensed dog breeder your dog doesn't need nuts!

Hopefully to they'll be more enforcement.

Yes! When a supposedly "social" Pit Bull Terrier attacks and kills its owner when they are sleeping in the same bed (no sarcastic comments, please!) and is then taken to the temple to apologise to the corpse, there is something very, very wrong!!!

This kind of dogs is just not a great toy or pet for stupid people.
Look at the owner then you know about the mental stage of a dog.

I remember the days when owners in the uk had to have a dog licence to keep their pet same thing should be done here and with a microchip so dogs can be easily traced back to the owner if and when it needs to be, theres no such thing as a bad dog but theres lots of bad owners and when it starts hitting the money in the owners pockets only then will they become good owners. As we all know money talks here and the only way things will change is with money, lots of talk but very little action until money is concerned

I was talking to some Thai guy in a village the other week and he commented on my dog (see the photo) he said he had a dog also and I ask what breed. The guy literally said "oh you know the kind that's really big and likes to bite people".

This was an otherwise normal middle aged farmer but he thought this to be a totally reasonable thing to say. Shameless idiots.
