Praise for primary school kid who saved 4,000 baht to buy her mum a gold ring for her birthday

It was the latest video featuring Thais who have saved money. 

 

This time it went viral on TikTok under the name of zumo4422.

 

It featured a little girl in P4 who went into a gold shop in Serm Thai Complex in Maha Sarakham in the north east of the country, reported Sanook.

 

The girl had saved up 4,000 baht that was neatly packaged in big and small notes. 

 

 

She said she wanted to get a gold ring for her mum's birthday.

 

The shop gave her a special discount and a goody bag to mark her efforts.

 

And told her that if it was the wrong size then her mum could return it within three days. 

 

ASEAN NOW notes that Thais are not renowned for the ability to save money, that may explain the spate of stories recently.

I have found that Thai's in general especially girls/women have such respect for their parent's.  I think it is a very commendable trait. My wife who is Thai is exceptionally good at saving and dosent like spending money on herself.

It’s a lot of money for a person that age to have.  And I did wonder how she was able to save all that money at her age.  I’m surprised that wasn’t asked when she was interviewed.  But it was on Tic Toc.  
But kudos to her.  The young lady did a very nice gesture.  Buying a ring for her mother.

I agree totally, all these sour, jaded sexpats who have to berate even a nice piece of news every time...hoping Karma will visit them soon in the same horrible, negative way they talk about Thailand and Thais the mag@ots.

OmSin bank gives them out on kids' birthdays.

Daughter #2 is an absolute Scrooge and has over 83,000 in her bank account now, plus whatever there is in her neatly organised row of piggy banks - one for each denomination coin, one for notes.

For years we've given her whatever coin change we've had at day's end, sure mounts up, when she has 1000 it gets banked.

Note: mother an accountant, is saving hereditary?

This story is propaganda nonsense, but the math does check out.

 

Thai gold is sold by the baht weight.

 

But each baht weight consists of 4 salungs each weighing 3.81 grams.

 

I see the shop keeper weighed the ring and it the scale registered 1.9 grams so one half of a salung or 1/8 of a baht.

 

1/8 as a decimal is 0.125.

 

If you multiply 0.125 by the current price of 1 baht of thai gold you get (roughly) a 4KTHB sales price.

 

However the shop keepers scales indicated that the ring was just under a proper half salung so short changed the kid it would seem.

 

As an afterthough when rewatching the clip...the ring must also be hollow...it is quite big...and so could never weigh in at 1.9 grams if it was solid gold.

Just another cynic who cannot believe in a good luck story about Thais when one comes along.

 

Many decades ago my Mum told me that if I  can find nothing good to say about something, it is best to say nothing.

 

Looking at some of these comments, she was right, yours among them.
