Thai police and customs officials arrested a truck driver and seized illegal narcotics, worth about 100 million baht hidden in oil drums, at a border checkpoint in the north-eastern province of Nong Khai today (Wednesday).

Officials became suspicious that oil drums were being brought into Thailand from Laos and had all of them examined usingan X-ray machine, which revealed something unusual in some of the drums.

Upon opening, the drums were found to contain 10kgs of crystal meth and Ecstasy and 3.8 million methamphetamine tablets, with an estimated street value of 100 million baht.

Seems to be an awful lot more drugs coming over now - maybe they should either re-instate the death penalty for anything over 5kg or a life time sentence for anything over 5kg.

Many years ago I was stood on the Thai side of the Mekong near Nong Khai. Small boats were crossing the river in a pretty random kind of way. God knows what some were carrying, but no way of checking their cargo was in evidence.

My guess is that the same amounts as before are being smuggled in but now that weed is off the table they can concentrate on the real drug problem hence more chemical busts.

Which I'm sure will be publicly destroyed?

Perhaps to fund the ethnic minority militias that are fighting for freedom against the current Burmese Junta's genocidal terrorist Tamadaw??
