Daily News Thai Caption: Army of Caterpillars

Daily News went to the temple of Wat Pa Cha Thai in Muang district of Satun in the far south of Thailand after a large number of furry caterpillars invaded the monks' quarters.

They were about an inch long and had been voraciously chewing away at the leaves on the temple trees.

Local agricultural chief Charnnarong Wirunsan said they were "Norn Bung" and left to their own devices would all turn into butterflies.

But seeing as there were so many in close proximity to a 90 year old monk's dwelling it was felt better to sweep them up and burn them and apply chemicals to the remainder.

This plan was hitting a few snags however so they were now looking at Plan B.

Sirya, the abbot for the last seven years, said they'd never had a problem with caterpillars.

Monkeys, birds and dogs, yes, but not caterpillars.

He related how while one monk was sleeping a caterpillar fell on his head causing him to scratch endlessly.

They needed to wash him three times to get the caterpillar's secretions off.

Surprised no locals swept them up, deep fried them in Soy sauce and made a few baht.
