About 50,000 police officers will be deployed at road checkpoints and at public celebration venues across Thailand between December 29th and January 4th, to ensure public safety, Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat, the national police chief, said today (Wednesday).

During the period, trucks will be banned from highways, on both inbound and outbound routes to and from the capital, unless they have received prior permission and use the special lanes or routes reserved for trucks, he said.

Police will also be performing other duties, such as prevention and suppression of illegal activities and ensuring that law and order is maintained at the scenes of public celebrations, such as New Year countdown events..

Seems all the problem of reducing the annual road massacre are now inhand - but not holding my breath for any significant changes.

Yeah, it is because the cops have little influence over the problem.

The problem is the culture,  lack of education/training and poor engineering of the roadways.  But, a person needs to actually drive here to witness the issues, which are way beyond a cop writing a ticket.

Two weeks!!! You slave driver !!! it is one week isn't it?, or are you counting Songkran too, which means they have three months to recover from this week.

I was including the other seven dangerous days of staring at their phone.

Yes all sitting down playing on their phones like every year  it's all for show

I couldn't find better words.

And the carnage continues undisturbed. Lawless country.

Just like during APEC.  All the cops and there were hundreds of them on Sukhumvit were staring at their phones every time I walked by them.

Why doesn't any journalist, and in Thailand that term has to be used very loosely, ask why they only do checkpoints at holiday times and not all year. I'd like to know their answer, although we all know why. They just can't be bothered.

If it is, there'll be no traffic whatsoever.

As a non-native I often get caught in different English wordings.

US seems to use "truck" for what is usually named "pickup" here.

And sure pickups are not banned from highways.

Would love it

Nonsense! It is obvious these officers are using mobile devices to enter essential data into the police national computer. One reason fhe s-mart BMW is so effective. Today's password is Hello Kitty and tomorrow Angry Birds.........????

I wont be exposing myself publicly to police scrutiny during the day or evening  during this time period!
