Daily News Thai Caption: He believes it's valuable

Reporters from Daily News went to the far south after a man in Satun found what appeared to be a pearl in his dinner.

Safat, 45, had bought a kilo of Hoi Wan - sweet shellfish - from a shop and took them home for his dinner.

As he was consuming the last three he was surprised to find something hard in his mouth.

It was a pearl of some kind. He said he wouldn't sell until an expert had examined his find.

ASEAN NOW notes that it may be what is known as a Melo pearl, a very valuable gemstone that cannot be farmed that sometimes appears in molluscs.

A particularly fine specimen once sold for $722,500 at Christie's putting it on a par with diamonds.
