Sanook Thai Caption: "I'm not a mafia guy"

Sanook reported on a war between rival Indian curry restaurants in Ao Nang, Krabi, southern Thailand, a popular tourism area in the high season.

There has been a feud going on for some time and people are unhappy with a 52 year old Indian man who they claim has been acting like a mafia figure.

This followed an altercation with the son of a Thai woman who owns an Indian restaurant and the 52 year old Indian, owner of another.

The 25 year old son was punched in the face. It was claimed that the older attacked shouted: "Don't mess with me. I've been here 24 years".

Later a Thai woman arrived and after the son asked what he had done to deserve this treatment she unleashed many of her employees in a further attack on his person.

He is recovering from the attack.

The Indian man told the media that he has indeed been in Thailand for 24 years.

He said that he was completely innocent and scrupulously honest. Certainly not mafia, certainly not the kind of person who would threaten and extort others.

"I help society", he added.

Police are trying to avoid doing any work in the case.

They favor mediation over prosecution pointing out that such a case warrants a negotiated settlement.
