Actually, if you read all the stuff health experts say, nearly everything is bad for our health, from processed food, meat, sunlight UV radiation, toothpaste, sugar, salt, artificial sweeteners, electricity radiation from your TV or phone, fruit juices, BBQ food, cooked food, fat, vegetable spreads, cheese, milk, and overdone toast, and even sex.

That's it, I will stop cleaning my teeth

I'd rather die not too old and only short time ill rather then live a long time with pain and suffering.

Drinking alcohol in excess once in a while or in moderate amount regularly is not going to kill you.

I am sure drinking a bit will reduce stress levels and they stress is a major cause of ill health.

I agree to drink moderate, but Im not happy to be part of the kind of socializing drinking requires for some or I would say most, because it is always alchohol involved when people going to meet up. Me and my wife enjoy alchohol when travelling.

To release stress I have other methods, and no alcohol needed.

Yes. And I agree.  I have many ways to reduce stress too.  Only one is a relaxing evening watching a classic film while drinking brandy and eating a good quality imported dark chocolate bar, while my other half gives me a foot massage....heaven.

Being sober in bars that are prostitute pick-up joints in Thailand , seeing how they carry on , how they tell the same jokes to each other every night and the constant innuendoes and "outrageously" bending over making sex noise  and discussions about who has had sex with who and the denials and then the hilarious punchline "I'm still a virgin" , gets rather reparative after a while and the "I no member, me dunk" .

But you all go ahead and party and enjoy yourselves

I never heard that - but then, maybe I was just too drunk.

But seriously, I don't think that is restricted to Thai bars or nightlife business. Go to any place where people regularly drink at night anywhere in this world and stay sober and it gets worse the longer the evening is.

I used to drink "with the lads", on the customer side of the bar........such fun.

After working behind the bar, sober and listening to them, I ceased to treasure their company.

My experience meeting up with the lads who drink more frequently than me, is after a few drinks, they ending up on the same conversations as last time we where there, same politics, cultural differences between the west and asia (basically how stupid thais is) and last but not least of course solving world problems, and that means all of them.

In the meantime I ride another interesting route, went to an Island, offshore for work, planted new crops and hope they will survive, but I just cant talk about that. That is so far from their reality and not interesting at all.

When did people talk about the last book they read to their friends? Nobody do that anymore, not even talk about movies, I mean good quality movies,

As long I keep up with football\soccer teams I have something to talk about for a few minutes, but not really my sport.

Drinking and socilizing I find very shallow to be earnest.

This is a classic drinker's response.

Firstly in denial about the effects of the alcohol they drink (v.WHO above) and then cannot conceive of life without an alcohol model of socialising.

As said drinkers can't see outside the glass.

Translation: If you say you don't drink much, that is iron-clad proof that YOU DO!!!!!!!

My sister goes by similar logic. Many victims of sexual abuse have repressed memories about it. She personally doesn't recall being sexually abused at all.

That's iron-clad proof that SHE WAS!!!!!!!!

"WHO estimates that excessive alcohol consumption kills 3million each year"

Most people know this? But eating or drinking anything in excess is bad for you? Even water?

But still, some of the stuff is more harmful than the other. We all have a choice, and before there where more smokers in my home country, and now, almost nobody I frequently hang out with are smokers. The reason massive information over decades and stronger regulations.

Totally agree, but really it comes down to common sense, I do realize not everyone has it though? You mention smoking it kills 8 million people worldwide per year, including second hand smoke,  alcohol abuse, around 3 million. But then if you look at obesity it kills almost 3 million people per year?

Sad but true, humans need to be strict controlled when it comes to free choices. I have marketing school, and all the books we where told to read, and also required to learn, was about manipulating people to make “free” choices they thought  where their own decisions. Create false needs. Thats why we need to regulate massive bad influenced commercials.

Humans is not making their own decisions, we are all manipulated, even me who try to live healthy and think I make healthy decisions are manipulated to believe I need products I really do not need, but somehow I feel better using them. Being aware of it, doesnt change that. Placebo is a strong mechanism in all of us.

100%. We are all selective in our puritanism. I was asking how bad the smoke season would be in Chiang Mai and if I should relocate to Hua Him for a couple of months.

Said a long timer: "Uh, about that spliff you're smoking right now?".
