Thai Rath went to Nakhon Phanom in the north east of Thailand where a fire had ripped through a row of two story cement and wood shop houses on Thursday.

Yesterday the 5 owners and 3 renters of the properties were joined by volunteers as they sifted through the charred remains of their lives.

The worst hit was 86 lady of Chinese descent Thoh Ngianthi who had amassed 3 million baht in cash and 30 baht weight in gold jewelry in a lifetime of dilligence and plain hard work.

It was all stashed in an upstairs wardrobe at her rented terrace where she ran a grocer's.

Granny Thoh - whose children are all well off and who had given her many gifts over the years - was said to be a thrifty lady.

She had reason for a few smiles, said the media who had a video of the search for valuables.

Much of her gold had already been found and it was expected that all would be recovered. That much gold would likely be worth about 900,000 baht, suggests ASEAN NOW.

It had fortunately not melted as firefighters had been able to douse the flames in time before it got too hot.

No mention was made of the money.

Meanwhile the residents received aid packages from volunteer and other organistions in the form of household necessities and food as well as cash payments of 20,000 to 60,000 baht to tide them over.

Granny Thoh got 19,000 baht in a check.

Investigations into the fire that started in her house continue.

Who seemed to have a mistrust of banks?
