Biden rules out sending Ukraine F-16 jets

US President Joe Biden has ruled out sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, despite renewed calls from Ukrainian officials for urgent air support.

Asked by a reporter on Monday if the US would be providing the planes, Mr Biden simply replied "no".

His comment comes a day after Germany's leader also ruled out sending jets.

Ukraine has long been pushing its allies to send advanced war planes to help Kyiv take control of its airspace in its ongoing war with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the country's top military officials say there should be no taboos on such military aid - but the US and its partners fear this would lead to further escalation with a nuclear-armed Russia.

Arm Ukraine to win ASAP.

What is the point of all this otherwise?

I suspect that the calculus is to wait out the Russians who have logistical problems with weapons supplies. Far from the narrative that Russia is playing the long game to wait out western resolve, I think the opposite is probably true.

Unfortunately a one way trip in an F16, may be from an airport in Ukraine to Moscow, and

if the Kremlin were to get a crashing F16, it would be a bad idea.

Just saying.

Well the US and the UK can give back the nukes that Russia took as not to invade the Ukraine. That would bring this whole mess to a end and maybe live as we know it.

Makes you wonder why a few months ago, he declared sending them would amount to WW3.

That's taking it out of context, he clearly said what is in the vid, which included a combination of jet fighters piloted by Americans. Taking one single snippet from the whole statement does not make it a whole.

Biden: "The idea that we're going to have tanks and planes and trains with American pilots and crews"

That is not happening, the crews for the 31 tanks will be Ukrainian. Plus its not expected to be for many months yet.

Tell that to Putin.

You can't tell Putin anything, his quite happy to carry on getting rid of Russia's aging weaponry.

Fine, but he doesn't have any modern weaponry to replace them. He's estimated to have only a handful of his newest main battle tanks. Same goes for his newest fighter jets.

Is Putin's upcoming spring escalation a good idea?

I don't know, I hope it's another failure if there's one to be seen.

Estimated being the key word by the American war experts no doubt is not something I would not take any notice of.

Looks likes jets are off the cards for the moment but the US is preparing a large new package that now includes long range precision guided rockets/bombs. Range of about 94 miles. These will devastate Russian supply lines and other targets making a great combination for when the tanks arrive.

U.S. readies $2 billion-plus Ukraine aid package with longer-range weapons -sources

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States is readying more than $2 billion worth of military aid for Ukraine that is expected to include longer-range rockets for the first time as well as other munitions and weapons, two U.S. officials briefed on the matter told Reuters on Tuesday.

The weapons aid is expected to be announced as soon as this week, the officials said. It is also expected to include support equipment for Patriot air defense systems, precision guided munitions and Javelin anti-tank weapons, they added.

One of the officials said a portion of the package, expected to be $1.725 billion, would come from a fund known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which allows President Joe Biden's administration to get weapons from industry rather than from existing U.S. weapons stocks.

Oh goody.  My shares in Raytheon and Northrop Grumman are going to zoom upwards.  Thanks, Joe.
