Thai Rath reported on an accident in Udon Thani, NE Thailand, in which a pedestrian crossing the road was hit by a pick-up then dragged for 50 meters by a sedan coming in the opposite direction on a dark street.

The man was an off-duty senior policeman who was thought to be crossing the road to relieve himself.

It was 7pm when Muang district police were contacted about the accident outside the old offices of the Nong Bua municipality on the Udon to Sam Phrao Road.

Lying dead in a pool of blood with a fractured skull was 51 year old Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Chettha Buajan attached to the Non Sung police.

Police found a Honda City with damage to the front. The cop had been dragged 50 meters by that car.

One hundred meters away was a similarly damaged Toyota pick-up.

The body was taken to the Udon Thani Medical Center ahead of release to relatives for cremation.

Khomsan, 61, the pick-up driver, said he was on his way home from his job as a building contractor.

He said that the man suddenly appeared in front of him and despite braking he hit him.

The man was then propelled into a car coming in the opposite direction.

He apologised to relatives of the victim saying it was an accident.

Jiraporn, 28, the City driver said she was on her way home from a drinks company where she worked.

She said that something flew into the path of her car and upon stopping further down the road realised that it was a man.

At the scene was Thipthanya, 59, the elder sister of the victim's wife. She said he was a policeman.

She had arrived with him and his wife in a pick-up to go to a company to get a fridge and some other things.

While she and the wife were handling that she heard the sound of the accident. She believed her brother-in-law had crossed the road to urinate.

Police agreed noting that the area is dark and devoid of street lighting.

They will be interviewing everyone connected to the accident including witnesses as part of the case.
