Video on Youtube shows fire coming from the underside of a passenger plane (at 5-6 seconds) during takeoff from Phuket International Airport.

 

It was Azurair Flight number ZF 3604 bound for Moscow at 5 pm on Saturday.

 

The flight was aborted after a tire on the right side of the aircraft exploded. The pilot was alerted to smoke by air traffic control.

 

 

The plane was parked on the taxiway until just after midnight Sunday morning as initial repairs began.

 

16 other flights were affected with some diverted to Krabi and Suvarnabhumi airports, reported Sanook.

 

All passengers were reported safe with everyone affected being looked after by the airline and airport authorities.

 

A subsequent report suggested that the burst tire had caused an engine malfunction to occur. An investigation is underway.

Curious how the 309 pax are handled? Stamped back in at Immigration? Then accommodated on other flights?

 

Azur has two scheduled arrivals (from VKO, both 763) today. ZF2907/RA73078    ZF3703/RA73080

 

Both are delayed.

 

Maybe one of those will be used to fly the stranded pax back home? And deliver spares and techs?

Looks like a compressor stall

 

Happened to me one time on a flight back from Sanaa to Sharjah on Yemen airways, on an old 727,  pilot ignored it and just flew on with it banging all the way back to Sharjah

 

I was seated right at the back of the aircraft right under that third engine that the 727 has

Old Russian plane cleared from Phuket Airport runway after engine fire aborts takeoff

An old Russian Boeing 767 jet was finally moved from the runway at Phuket International Airport after the Azur Air aircraft right jet engine malfunctioned during takeoff.

 

This resulted in the cancellation of all flights on Saturday evening until early Sunday morning as airport emergency crews sterilised the situation and moved the aircraft off the runway.

 

Air traffic control staff observed smoke and flames coming from the right engine of the twinjet Boeing 767-300ER as it was preparing to depart for Moscow at 4:30pm on Saturday. After being alerted to the situation, the captain terminated takeoff and safely brought the plane to a stop on the runway.

 

This Boeing 767 aircraft was originally built in 1988.

 

It took roughly 40 minutes to move the aircraft to a taxiway junction, where it obstructed other flights from landing or taking off. Repair work continued until 12:30am on Sunday, after which the plane was removed from the junction, allowing flight services to resume.

 

According to a Bangkok Post report, a total of 47 flights were affected, with some diverted to Krabi, Koh Samui, and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airports. The Air Azur flight had been chartered for 309 passengers and 12 crew members.

 

Questions are being asked in social media about the possible safety situation of planes coming out of Russia at the moment with Boeing parts unable to be accessed by Russian owned planes at this time due to sanctions.

Looks like a brake fire in RH main gear after the rejected take off. Full pax / fuel close to V1 would mean heavy braking and a lot of kinetic energy to turn into heat.

An alarming reference, especially if I was Russian:-

 

"Earlier, the head of Rosavia, Oleksandr Neradko, said that Western-made airliners, which are currently not undergoing maintenance due to sanctions, can be used until 2030. 

"I am sure that it has not become more dangerous to fly - and this [lack of original spare parts] does not mean anything," he said. 

The official demanded to stop calling the fact that planes in Russia fly using spare parts from other planes as "cannibalization".

Yeah, I think the first thing that happened with the engine. Maybe it hurts right when you hit the emergency brake at that the one speed could easily cause of law in the fire

Good thing that eagle eye ATC saw that engine fire before the pilots hit V1 take-off speed.

There is suspicion that Russian airlines are cutting corners on safety and have been operating without proper maintenance following tough sanctions imposed on the country following Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

If that's true, there will be more evidence. Let's hope it doesn't become a trend. 

 

I gotta think the airline manufacturers or the countries these POS fly over would step in and demand they maintain the planes. I don't know.

Sorry to be pedantic, but for the sake of accuracy,  V1 is the last abort speed, Vr is rotation.

Without question that is called an engine surge.  Can be caused by a number of reasons.  The way to halt it is to retard the thrust, but in takeoff procedure, that is not what you want to do.  So as long as they are below V1 speed they must abort.  Not a tire.
