Daily News Thai Caption: Why were they just watching?

 

Daily News reported on an incident in Ayutthaya when a young man fell off a ferry and was saved by a friend.

 

Neither of them could swim.

 

The drama played out on a video posted under the name of tew2104 on TikTok.

 

A man in blue had fallen in and his friend in black jumped in to save him.

They were in full view of other boat passengers including adults who just watched.

 

Students on the ferry managed to get a rope to the floundering guys and the boat captain managed to steer them to safety.

 

Netizens praised the friend for his selfless act even though he couldn't swim himself.

 

But the majority turned on the other passengers who watched "as if nothing was happenening".

 

And they noted that a life saving ring on the boat was not even utilized.

So you think everyone should have jumped in? 

The guy on the scooter wearing the helmet, should have taken off his helmet and put his bike on its stand, then jumped in while there were already two other people in the water helping the guy?  
Then the girl on the other bike should have jumped in too? 
Followed by the school kids and the anyone else watching? 

How do you know any of them could swim? 

If I'm ever on a boat with you I'll let you jump in first, seeing as you are waiting for an opportunity to show what a hero you'd be.

In Thailand this is complicated because so many people never learn to swim.

But in other countries there is also  - "The Bystander Effect" - in similar situations.

As another poster has pointed out - a further modern complication is the moronic cellphone response.

I did read elsewhere that most Thai people cannot swim. A rare number of public swimming pools outside Bangkok. Parents forbid children from messing around in rivers. Who can afford swimming lessons when the next meal is important?

If there are westerners here with Thai kids, teach them to swim.

If I was on a boat with you I'd push you in and then later ask how did it feel to have all those people stare at you as you were fighting for your life.
