Pollution levels in Chiang Mai have had "no effect on tourism", says tourist chief

Thai Rath reported from Thailand's northern capital of tourism Chiang Mai where they said levels of PM 2.5 (particulate matter) in the air from the burning of fields since the start of February had been causing concern about the effect on tourist arrivals.

 

The area has bounced back after the pandemic but the local tourism industry chief Phallop Sea-jew was unconcerned about the pollution.

He said that the fluctuating levels of pollution were within the 50-100 micrograms per cubic meter of air and were within acceptable limits.

 

No tourists had cancelled because of the air quality, he ascertained.

How would he even know the reasons for cancellation? Most Thais and expats are aware of the annual burning season and bad air quality so will likely not book in the first place. I've met many expats over the years who leave their Chiang Mai homes for southern beaches at this time. If he is talking about Chinese cancellations, then air quality probably not so different to their home cities.

So lets keep the pollution levels as they are, keep the present number of tourists and do nothing instead of cleaning up the air, marketing how clean CM is and get more tourists in?

Phallop Sea-jew clearly has no idea, or doesn't want to know about the causes of cancer, as long as the money is coming in.  Health and Safety Course would stand him (and many others in positions of responsibility) in good stead.

a bad experience is told to 10 friends…once these blind Asian golf packages end in March, the numbers will drop significantly 

 

thailand has had 2 days since the first of the year under 50….most over 100 and recently over 150 meaning last 2 weeks 

 

if he was educated on facts, WHO recommends under 25….thailand own artificial number (not based on science) but on marketing is under 50 which CM doesn’t meet 95% of the time between Feb and May

 

lsst year was an aberration…why? Because it rained a lot during this time frame…

 

The current gov policy is to rely on rain to clear the air…just pathetic

The issue is not tourists coming but those coming , never coming again due to pollution and the lost revenue of those that wont come as they here of it from the people poised by it that did come

It's pretty polluted anyplace in Thailand at the moment. 

 

At least Chiang Mai is a pleasant place to be despite the horrendous air quality compared to somewhere in Issan.

Not with the expensive cancellation policies of most airlines but watch next time if they return

He seems to forget most book 6+ months ahead for better fare prices.

Cancellation or changes are costly & many falsely assumed the government would crack down or address the problem

 

They know better now ????
