THE WEEK THAT WAS How cigarettes nearly killed Rooster in Australia and why Anutin is “Arthur Daley on Steroids”

The sight of a man frantically trying to put out a fire in the back of his pick-up in Thailand after a passenger threw out a cigarette butt reminded me of an incident in Australia in the 1980s before I lived permanently in Thailand.

 

(I admit to having told the story years ago, but us near pensioners do love to repeat ourselves…)

 

I’d been working at Tubemakers in WA saving money for a trip back to the Land of Smiles - as it truly was then - on a UK working holiday visa.

 

After six weeks cutting steel and painting white posts white, I’d decided to hitchhike to Sydney to further seek my fortune in the Land of Milk and Honey. I deliberately took no money with me save for a few bucks for chocolate. On Day One I got from Perth to Kalgoorlie where I slept on the post office steps in my trusty sleeping bag.

 

 

Just outside the gold rush town the next morning a battered old “ute” stopped for me. It was driven by a craggy old man with a long white beard who introduced himself as “Snow”. After a few kilometers he said: “You can drive, can’t yer mate?”

 

An awkward silence followed after I replied in the negative. Snow would have to do 2,000+ KMS to Melbourne himself.

 

Still, we got on well. He saw me looking puzzled at the odometer that only showed a few thousand clicks:

“Aw, don’t worry about that cobber, it's been round the clock once”.

 

 

Behind our heads in the flatbed were two large drums containing his fuel for the long drive. Snow was not paying the exorbitant prices for gas on the Nullarbor Plain, a vast almost treeless tract of land that links East to West. The fuel was covered by a stinking old tarp under which bags and cases sat.

 

On the first night it was amazing to see the headlights of approaching cars half an hour before they passed us. It was so flat and clear. What could go wrong on such a peaceful night down under.

 

Snow, mostly grumpy uttering obscenities in that fetching antipodean way, consumed a “tinnie” of beer every few minutes as he drove puffing away on his Winfield. Cans and butts alike were tossed out his window.

 

Suddenly he yelled out waking me as I slept barricaded in the passenger seat by old clothes. What he thought was a car’s headlights coming up behind was in fact a raging inferno.

 

The tarp was on fire and surely the fuel was about to explode any second. We really should have run for it.

 

We both piled out the driver’s side and grabbed some jerrycans of water. I hurled it at the fire catching Snow full in the face…

 

But we got the blaze extinguished in the nick of time then warmed ourselves in an impromptu fire built nearby with some twigs from the burning embers of the tarp.

 

“Oh my pommie mate,” he intoned, “that’s the closest I've ever come to meeting my maker, whoever the “f” he is”. Me too, I had to agree.

 

Two days later, we parted in the suburbs of Melbourne with a handshake, now best mates after our mutual near death experience. I caught a much bigger truck to Liverpool and slept in the cab like a baby dreaming of Thailand.

 

 

I did make my fortune in Sydney working overtime at the Yellow Pages in Milson’s Point investing most of the money in Thai language lessons on return to Bangkok. The rest as they say, is history.

 

The last week started on a high for me shamelessly promoting myself (and Scrabble) after a weekend win in Korat. My opponent played PEDERAST and I countered with WEIRD which drew a wry smile from me, perhaps the only one observing who knew both meanings!

 

 

I belted off back to Bangkok on my 250 Honda down “Death Highway” arriving just in time to see Spurs beat Chelsea. Mrs R knows me well enough that I’d survive the road and not miss the footy!

 

The week on the hallowed columns of ASEAN NOW was the usual mix of nonsense sprinkled with the occasional dose of seriousness.

 

There was some “Brazen Bridge Bonking” in Phitsanulok with Rooster going to town seeing how many innuendos (inyourenddos) I could “slip in” to one story.

 

A soiled blanket was recovered.

 

 

Later in the week a foreign couple were caught on viral vid having a bit of “how’s yer father” by a festival stage in Pattaya, as you do.

 

It will surprise no one that my Facebook feeds are full of sites celebrating Viz Comic.

 

 

Siam Rath (joined by Daily News) continued their shameless PR for everything RTP with more stories about the wonderful Tourist Police returning a Qatari’s Louis Vuitton bag followed by plod’s check-up on the rip-offs at Damnoen Saduak.

 

I made a pact with an Aussie mate in the 1980s that we’d never visit a floating market. I never have, the thought of these tourist traps brings me out in a cold sweat.

 

 

The subject of a new word for me - “sharenting” came up. That’s parents posting pictures of their young children online - police say don’t - that both parties might later come to regret. I was as guilty as the next until Facebook themselves refused to sanction a post of my daughter. I’m more careful now.

 

It’s a pity Facebook are not more diligent on ASEAN NOW’s arm on their platform. Unmoderated it is becoming a toxic mess that my overlords should heed.

 

An interesting story contained comments by justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin who wants to legalize betting on bull, cock and fish fighting that have all returned in earnest following the pandemic.

 

Betting is allowed at Thailand’s few horse racing tracks but I could see Somsak promoting off course wagering too. It really is time that the authorities acknowledge that their compatriots are gambling mad and tax them accordingly for everyone's benefit.

 

 

Yes, there needs to be safeguards - gambling can be an addiction - but to pretend it doesn’t exist is nonsense. Legalizing the business would also help to remove one of the RTP’s extortion revenue streams.

 

While I’m on the subject I would thoroughly recommend a day out at the RBSC’s track on Henri Dunant road in Bangkok. Pay for the enclosure with buffet and have a great afternoon out cheering on the nags.

 

In visa news it has emerged that very few people have opted for the government’s long term visas with benefits. The penny if not the baht seems to have finally dropped that people with a million bucks don’t need work permits…

 

Meanwhile in Phuket it was reported that a “Yellow and Red Card” system was being brought in for naughty Johnny Foreigner. Some posters thought they’d get chucked out for twice forgetting their bike helmets.

 

 

Relax. The best thing to do when the Thai authorities bring in idiotic rules is do what the Thais do, ignore them.

 

They’ll go away.

 

Also on the Pearl Necklace of the Andaman, it was reported that nearly 7,600 Russians have applied for visa extensions. “Phuket is a nice place to visit with delicious food and good weather,” said the local immigration chief who didn’t think to add “with absolutely no chance of conscription”.

In Greece a tragic train crash had by Friday claimed the lives of at least 57 people.

 

In the UK a 49 year old woman called Auriol Grey in Huntingdon was jailed for three years for manslaughter after she screamed at a 77 year old woman riding her bicycle on the pavement. Celia Ward was so shocked by the abuse that she wobbled into a passing car and was killed.

 

The judge refused to take Ms Grey’s cerebral palsy excuse into account. Good. We are taught to treat people with this condition like everyone else, are we not?

 

 

Back in Thailand health minister Anutin Charvirakul and whistleblower-in-chief Chuwit Kamolwisit had a very public falling out. The latter had a furious rant appearing to gob on Anutin’s picture claiming that the BJP leader had offered him 50 million baht in exchange for votes in Bangkok.

 

They were once BBFs said Anutin who denied everything looking like he was being extremely economical with that commodity in short supply among politicos, the truth. The DPM makes George Cole’s famous character from Minder look like Arthur Daley on steroids.

 

 

Anutin then went on the Chao Phraya declaring that Bangkokians love his campaign promise of a 50 baht all-travel-services-day-ticket. The idea is a vote winner; hopefully he can get some of the money by taxing billionaire buddies getting even richer on ganja.

 

A Thai story from the UK featured a 23 year old man called Kieran who needs 250K sobs (the term Arthur used) to get home after falling from a third floor hotel balcony.

 

 

He had insurance. But I mean do they ever pay up. They always seem to have a get out clause in the small print. I’ve saved a fortune over the years paying cash for health and accidents and I’ll go to my grave loathing insurance. I'll only get it when the law says I have to.

 

Finally, a lady in Samut Prakan got the attention of the public and press to her plight of water seeping into her land from a housing project by hanging out her smalls on several high wires next to power lines.

 

Eventually getting some action after being ignored she declared that her knickers would come down when she gets results.

 

There’s a moral there somewhere.

TV’s Grace answered me, when I asked her Like she IS a pretty good Visa Agent I think, and she said it always had been required to have been sent in from outside, … but I think that they just did not say this in Writing I think ? It was just Implied, … but now they seem to have made it specific and in Writing ?  So the Immigration Departments can now take off after you for this Possibly ?

 

In Requirements for Retirement Visa Extension,  “Must have an Annual Earning, and a deposit”  … … and in the Documents required  “Fund deposit certificate” issued by the Bank,  which I am SURE is New words here ?

Well I worked with a whole lot of Ukrainians on an Exploration Boat once, and they used to casualty call them “The Russian Crew” … despite them Not being Russian, they were just speaking it ! … The Russians who were there, were all very Competent Technically though well (Stuff their Supervisors ! … I used to have to watch them on the Cameras so I did not move the ship in an Incorrect direction while they were working out on the back deck, and for safety also. … and heard them switch to Ukrainian once ! and Brought this up casualty with them when they were back in the Recording room, …. And well they told me not to be so thick, ! … As they also spoke Polish in the West, as many of them were actually Ethnically Polish there. ! …

TV’s Grace answered me, when I asked her Like she IS a pretty good Visa Agent I think, and she said it always had been required to have been sent in from outside, … but I think that they just did not say this in Writing I think ? It was just Implied, … but now they seem to have made it specific and in Writing ?  So the Immigration Departments can now take off after you for this Possibly ?

But a week or two ago, … a Group of People with Russian Flags turned up at this protest, and said that they were just taking the Opportunity to joined the Protest, to protest, about the Discrimination of Russian Speakers Rights ! … Right ! … and then media discussion broke out, about whether they had basically Hijacked the protest or not. ?

 

But well Fix their rights up I say ! … By sending them back to Russia, so Putin can look after their Right to speak Russian all around the world ?  Right ? …. And then can speak as much Russian as they Like right ??? … ( Like possibly to his secret Police also Right ???)

 

… Yes, … A very Annoying situation all round there I think. ( To put it Lightly )

 

Well I worked with a whole lot of Ukrainians on an Exploration Boat once, and they used to casualty call them “The Russian Crew” … despite them Not being Russian, they were just speaking it ! … The Russians who were there, were all very Competent Technically though well (Stuff their Supervisors ! Right ?) …

 

… I used to have to watch them on the Cameras so I did not move the ship in an Incorrect direction while they were working out on the back deck, and for safety also. … and heard them switch to Ukrainian once ! and Brought this up casualty with them when they were back in the Recording room, …. And well they told me not to be so thick, ! … As they also spoke Polish in the West, as many of them were actually Ethnically Polish there. ! …
