Gary Lineker has been told to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use, the BBC has said.

It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.

The BBC said it considered Lineker's "recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines".

Alan Shearer joins Ian Wright in pulling out of Match of the Day - reaction as Gary Lineker steps back

 

Alan Shearer has joined Ian Wright in saying he will not appear on Match of the Day tomorrow, after Gary Lineker was forced off the programme.

 

Alan Shearer simply said on Twitter: "I have informed the BBC that I won't be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night."

 

Wright had tweeted earlier: "Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I've told the BBC I won't be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity."

Linekar isn't above the rules. Everyone knows everyone at the BBC is a left wing Labour voter (and if they're not, they soon become one if they wish to keep their job) but as a publicly funded organization they need to display impartiality.

 

Maitlis was a disgrace and now Linekar has taken over the virtue signaling duties. Hopefully he is sacked for constantly breaking his employment contract.

 

Just because you're so deluded that you think you have the moral high ground, doesn't mean the rules do not apply to you.

The BBC has been under the government's thumb since 2015. It is no longar an independent organisation but now little more than a government mouth piece.

Let’s take it apart:

I doubt everyone knows anything of the sort, if your statement is true then, this becomes a problem:

The BBC response to Lineker’s comments on social media with respect to Government Immigration policy (actual events AKA ‘reality’) indicate you are wrong in your first assertion and doubly wrong in your second.

 

Clearly Lineker is being censored for expressing views that are not inline with the extremism that has a grip of the Tory Party.

 

And he wasn’t making those remarks on the BBC, nor do they have any bearing on his role as a sports presenter.

 

Cancel culture right there, and the rightwing baying for it.

The word "impartial" is indeed included in the BBC contracts and it also includes when they aren't actually working for the BBC and are speaking publicly on other mediums

I don't know Lineker from a bar of soap but I think it is not totally unreasonable for high profile media personalities to be asked to limit expressing their private opinions on highly contentious issues. If I was boss I would limit it to those in the newsroom though, and not limit the ability of other hosts or entertainers such as those relating to soccer shows, to have their say.
