Court Sets Up Fact-Finding Panel Over Grey Senator Getting Off The Hook

SUPREME COURT President Chotivat Luengprasert has set up a committee to collect evidence and find facts pertaining to last October’s revocation of an arrest warrant by a Criminal Court judge for an allegedly grey senator.

 

Court of Justice spokesman Soravit Limparangsee confirmed today (Mar.13) the Supreme Court president is having the ad hoc committee compile pieces of evidence and facts involving the unidentified judge who had revoked the arrest warrant for Senator Upakit Pajareeyangkun suspected by police of involvement in a drug-dealing and money-laundering scam.

 

However, the spokesman said the fact-finding panel which has been given a 30-day time to finish the job and report it to the Supreme Court president has no legal authority to subpoena anybody for questioning about the scandal surrounding the allegedly grey senator.

Prachatai and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) also found in October 2022 that Upakit was wanted for arrest in connection with an alleged drug trafficking and money laundering ring operating out of a casino in the Golden Triangle, but the warrant was quickly retracted. A Thai news programme, meanwhile, reported that it never existed, while another outlet took down a story about the warrant without explanation.

 

Rangsiman noted in his speech that Upakit also owns a plot of land in Bangkok’s Soi Ari 5 and that the land is now the site of the headquarters for the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, a recently established political party that Gen Prayut recently joined.

It is absolutely incredible that criminal senators, ministers and palamentarians are protected by immunity even when they are for example clearly involved in money laundering, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, human trafficking, corruption and shady dealings.

The Criminal Court judge in question had reportedly excused that he had revoked the arrest warrant requested by the police and issued by him on the same day last October for the senator whom he had finally deemed as a  “very important person.”

According to the latest accounts, it's all been turned on its head, and it's the original team of met police who are now being investigated for having the audacity to apply for, and get, the original arrest warrant. Senior coppers weren't consulted. Oh my face!

Full Stop. End of investigation with no subpoena power. Parliament has same restraint to investigate anyone.
