On Thai roads YES.

It's a different system here on Thai roads.

 

It really annoys me when foreigners complain about this and that regarding driving on the road. I see foreigners coming to intersections blasting their horn aggressivly. When approaching an unsigned intersection without traffic lights just allow the first vehicle right of way, wait your turn.

 

Roundabouts are a big problem, Thai's are too polite, they stop (having right of way) for vehicles entering. 

 

There are many examples, foreigners need to assimilate, learn these techniques.

When you take into account the lack of training (at least by uk standards) the locals drive very well indeed.

Some thai drivers is better than most expat drivers who is not willing to adopt to the thai way of understanding the complicated pattern of driving.

 

Seen many expats creating dangerous situations because they are stubborn and think they know how to drive in Thailand.

Its difficult this one... 

 

Because there are many many more visible examples of terrible driving, rule breaking, drivers and riders placing themselves and others in dangers situations than I see in my home nation. 

 

For example:

On a 30 min ride home from the airport in Thailand I’ll cringe and grit my teeth numerous times as I see something dangerous and daft....  In comparison on a 2 hour ride in from the airport in the UK, I may see one manoeuvre that the driver (friend / family / Taxi etc) comments on and I think its perfectly fine !!!... 

 

That said, the vast majority of drivers in Thailand drive well - but there are more dangerous drivers here than I see in the UK... Compared to other countries (i.e. Middle East) Thailand is a pleasure. 

 

I drive daily in Thailand and driving here really doesn't bother or worry me at all...  so its not as bad as many of us make out. But, the daily news does tell a different story. 

 

Not wanting to Thai bash - but, I do think there are more dangerous drivers in Thailand than in the UK. 

And... to offer a positive light, I find the level of non-confrontationalism here more relaxing, but only up to a point... In general, most people don’t get upset when another road users makes a mistake, in the UK, people get upset and aggressive.... BUT... there are some ‘unhinged characters’ here who’ll go well over the top in response to a ‘papped horn’ !!!

 

So, I’ll Vote... for the most part no better, no worse... but at the extremes, worse.

Mrs been driving 10 years, couple of days ago comes up to a junction light on a red, asks if can go or not. Last month stopped at red lights, car pulls up next to us then drives off against the light, so she does as well. Said it was alright as somebody had ignored the light first! I need accident insurance.

Me too, and driving the wrong way up a dual carriageway to avoid long U-turn.

i have over 50 yrs driving experience and am qualified to pass comments on thai driving....they would not/never pass a Uk driving test end of story !!

Sorry, no.

The number one very dangerous violation I see is tail gating at high speeds.  Traveling at 120kph and 3 feet off the person in front rear bumper is common.  They have no training or concept of speed, reaction time, braking, skids, etc.  Add , the dodging in and out of cars at very high speeds super dangerous. 

I suggest anyone who doubts this drive the route 7 to and from Bangkok a few times and see for yourself.

It's not a 'different system' it is a lack of common sense, consideration for other road users and a firm belief that what they do is right and everyone else is wrong. I have not really seen anyone coming to an intersection blasting their horns aggressively, either Thai or Foreigner.  Roundabouts are a problem not because they are too polite but because of the ones who charge into the roundabout thinking everyone else must stop for them. There is zero understanding of right of way by Thai drivers, either at  T-junctions, cross roads or any other form of intersection. They simply keep pushing until others have to allow them out. Basically Thia's throw out the highway code when they get behind the wheel and do what they have seen others doing while they grew up. Driving standards here have not improved in the 40 years I have been driving here, because there is no real enforcement of the traffic laws. Trying to assimilate Thai driving habits will get you pulled over in short notice back in the real world. There is no 'technique' to learn, what you need to do is simply drive defensively and expect them to do the unexpected because they generally will.
