Brit and Singapore pensioners rounded up in Bangkok on long overstays "to protect Thailand and stop losses"

I would organise this differently. The immigration computer knows the overstayers. I would put their names, nationality and pictures on the Internet and offer a financial reward if someone reports one. It could be that simple...

Agreed. But Thailand never, ever does simple. I am convinced that in some dark corner of a government building there is a specialist unit that dreams up how many ways it can make a simple task as difficult as possible so that those dealing with their 'victims' can feel important.

Sorry, but there is a degree of naivety in that post.

You think an overstayer gets involved with TM30's and 90 day reports.? I knew someone on 5 years overstay (12 years ago - if he is still alive he could be the record holder!)' Lived in the backwaters of Buriram with a Thai lady and picked up his state pension of 8,500 Baht p.m. (and that was when the rate was 50).

If the Immigration system was intelligent it would electronically

You proved my point?

Only the good guys report their accommodation address (TM30) and do 90 reports?

So are you saying that support law breaking?

Where do you draw your line - overstay, robbery, rape and murder?

And did any of those pensioners commit robbery, rape and murder? Overstay, yes, BUT they paid their way and cost the Thai government nothing.

IF they were committing real crimes I would be in agreement, but they weren't.

A quote from Charles Dickens for you.

What's the meaning of the phrase 'The law is an ass'?
The law is an ass is a derisive expression said when the the rigid application of the letter of the law is seen to be contrary to common sense.

I can’t help but feel sorry for the Brit, he’ll be deported back to the UK that he’s not visited in over a decade with likely no where to stay & hardly a pot to p155 in.

The UK is No Country For Old Men

It will cost them most of their pension for their power bills.

Good news, that 76 yr old brit looks like trouble. Thailand is now safe.

My God! sounds like an SAS style operation. Fanned out so no possible way to escape, officers moved in QUICKLY. A 76 year old and a 62 year old.  A real threat to Thai security. Mind you, if they were still getting a pension then one months amount of cash could have got them a retirement visa from most visa services in and around Bangkok. I mean...they advertise quite openly on FB. Just a thought.

Be honest, this guy probably arrived with some savings, had a good time, and as the UK government freezes pensions for those abroad, has slowly seen his income get to the point of being unable to pay an agent after the rent and food comes out.

76 - he can just go home now and get in a warm care home - 13 years on the raz and a bed in a care home seems quite a good end of life to me

He will not get into a care home if he is in good health, besides who would be paying for it?

The first man arrested was 76 year old British pensioner Joseph Taylor whose passport showed he had permission to stay until November 26th 2011.

Oh dear, that's a long time to be here without permission.

Likely he'll be sent back to the UK where he most probably has nothing to return to.

it may be tempting to stay longer in a foreign country, like this man did, but it's important to follow the visa regulations and respect the host country's laws.
it's well known that overstaying a visa in Thailand can result in deportation and a 10 year ban

Quite possibly also means he does not have a valid passport either Nov 2011 + 10 years gets you too Nov 2021, if that is the case where are they going to return him too

Good point but just because he has no valid passport doesn't mean he hasn't British citizenship.

No sympathy for them. Either they were trying to hide or not wanting to pay for the extension. Either way you’re not above the law. Out you go.

You have a real heart of gold, don't you?

I can see why they would think so, his age is probably higher than the IQ of the people who arrested him.

Jenny yelled Run Forest Run, but it was too late they, the Immigration boys, had fanned out to catch him before he ran across Thailand.

Stop what losses, please? I'm sure they spent more of their pension money here than their visa fees would have been.

So what, they broke the Law, no sympathy whatsoever.  Its the actions of idiots like this that mean the rest of us have to put up with 90 day reports, entry permits and only 12 month extensions.  Throw them all out, so well done immigration.
