A young Korean man living in Pattaya lied to his parents in South Korea about being abducted to get money to take care of his Thai girlfriend. Police who initially came to rescue him had to later arrest him for overstaying his visa.

 

Pattaya Police yesterday, April 4th, undertook a rescue operation to free a Korean man who had been reported abducted by his parents in South Korea.

 

The parents of Mr. Kim Hyeongil, 24, reported to the South Korea Embassy in Thailand that their son told them he was kidnapped before he was about to board a flight from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport back to South Korea. Kim suddenly lost contact with his parents, so the worried parents immediately contacted the embassy for help, leading to a rescue operation.

In my day, we'd have been able to go off grid for weeks if not more likely months and in truth, I reckon if we'd wanted to simple disappear they would never have found us.

 

As digitised and tracked as we are today, I still think I could drop totally off radar and if required, reappear under a new ID without very much trouble and a modicum of planning.
