IN LATE JUNE 2019, right after the U.S. Supreme Court released its final opinion of the term, Justice Clarence Thomas boarded a large private jet headed to Indonesia, he and his wife were going on vacation: nine days of island-hopping in a volcanic archipelago on a superyacht staffed by a coterie of attendants and a private chef.

If Thomas had chartered the plane and the 162-foot yacht himself, the total cost of the trip could have exceeded $500,000, fortunately for him, that wasn’t necessary, he was on vacation with real estate magnate and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, who owned the jet — and the yacht, too.

For more than two decades, Thomas has accepted luxury trips virtually every year from the Dallas businessman without disclosing them, documents and interviews show, these trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures, his failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said.

From his judicial history we know he won't have the decency to resign. The house will have something to say about this after easter I expect.

I'm sure Chief Justice Roberts will conduct a full inquiry, as he did with the Dobb's leak, of Justice Thomas' dealings.

Will there be questions under oath? flap, flap, flap, oink.

Clarence Thomas defends undisclosed 'family trips' with GOP megadonor – but here are the facts

A law passed in the wake of the Watergate scandal, the Ethics in Government Act, requires Supreme Court justices and many other federal officials to report most gifts to the public.

The exemption states that gifts of “food, lodging, or entertainment received as personal hospitality” don’t have to be disclosed.

It only applies to gifts received from an individual at that person’s home or at properties that they or their family own.

It's interesting to see how Justice Thomas describes the gift giver Harlan Crow and his wife as "dearest friends".  What, I wonder, was the basis of this friendship? What was their shared experience that contributed to this great friendship?

Thomas would say they met in a Walmart car park. He apparently hangs out in them frequently, if he is to be believed. </sarc>

Lots of money, and the trappings that goes with it.

Harlan Crow has lots of money.

Clarence Thomas wanted lots of money.
