No arrest warrant will be issued against Phra Netiwit for his failure to attend the military service lottery draw as required yesterday (Sunday) in Samut Prakan, said Maj-Gen Sirichan Ngathong, deputy spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army).

She explained that the former student activist, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, will be treated like other draft dodgers, in accordance with the established procedures of the Interior Ministry, which is that the Mueang district of Samut Prakan, where Netiwit was supposed to report, will issue a notification inviting him to the district office for questioning about his absence.

If the district officials discover that there is no valid reason, based on force majeure, for his failure to report and his actions are a violation of the Conscription Act, the officials will advise the police to take legal action against him.

Maybe a pointless question, but what happens to conscientious objectors? Is there such a concept in Thailand? Hanging's too good for 'em? I doubt it. They'd have strung up Ali, GOAT, amongst a million others.

"Refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, boxer Muhammad Ali stated "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong ... They never called me <deleted>." in 1966."

Unless it was just done as a way to get out of reporting.

It is often suggested that short term membership of the monkhood is used by all sorts of people as a way of avoiding a variety of liabilities and perhaps punishments.

I don't know if this young man has entered the monkhood out of conviction, or for other reasons. Perhaps he should be afforded the same consideration as certain older more notorious individuals.

I am not a Buddhist, the faith and it's practice is central to society and the monkhood seems to have a well structured clerical hierarchy. Perhaps it would be for them to decide.

Would love to know how many volunteers there are every year ?

Maybe not enough , that is why this conscription continues.

Maybe if they provided proper training, proper equipment, eliminated hazing and bullying, had a proper career path in place, fair and non discriminatory promotion system, decent pay, housing and insurance, eradicate pay for promotion practices etc etc, they might get volunteers from all walks of life, not just the press-ganged usually impoverished citizens who can't afford to buy their way out.

Didn't find the 2022 number, but for 2021 it was 3,524 volunteers, far fewer than the hoped for 10,000.

Result, 6,500 more conscripts required.

Yes indeed. We know two young men who attended the black/red day on Sunday.

One of each, one out, one in, but there's a catch.

The one who 'drew black' ensured that outcome by making a payment of 60,000 baht on Saturday. A double catch, agreed fee had been 30,000 until Friday

Inflation? Annual cost of living increase?

And one more on the topic of annual conscription, broadening the net of candidates:

For 2023 the minimum height for candidates has been reduced from 159cm to 146cm.

For those imperial-minded folk that's 5' 2 1/2" down to 4' 9 1/2".

Small arms experience?
