My German friend had a very nasty accident on his 'big bike' and spent several months in hospital accumulating a huge bill. Didn't get reported in the media. Had to make a major call on family back in Germany. Sadly ended up with a severe and permanent disability and returned back to Munich. Another expat mate of mine was killed in Saraburi in October last year. Out on his bike on a Saturday morning and an SUV just drove clean over him. Its all too common. Almost exactly the same kind of 'accident' that killed my wife's uncle in Udon. I'm a lifelong biker and ran DSA Direct Access riding courses for a time back in the UK also was IAM Car and Bike Observer and Examiner but I stay off two wheels in Thailand - getting on a bike here is attempted suicide... I'm with you. I've ridden Harleys and big bikes in the US for decades, never more than a couple minor fender benders, one was a car door opened when I SLOWLY passed a stopped vehicle, I swerved in time but she took out my signal light, the other was a drunk driver bumped me from behind at a traffic light while stopped, crushing the fender. I avoided accidents because I anticipate what may happen in any circumstance, but other than rentals in very small safe towns here I would not ride here. Opposite side of the street from the US right side is a big factor as to my reflexes. I'm not about to try to second guess drivers in a densely populated Thai city. If I did drive here I would make sure as to my insurance. Even without riding here I keep an emergency fund of $7,000 to $10,000 (238,000 to 340,000 baht) US to cover any disasters that might occur. I've kept that fund ever since I first set foot here in 2013. I also have a decent sized retirement mutual fund I could tap if things were worse. Lastly, I'm not going to be so arrogant as to single Thailand out, there are crazy murderous drivers everywhere, and in the US half the time guns get involved. I feel bad for the guy, and I'm not going to judge or preach, nobody expects such outcomes and it's easy to think you're prepared for emergencies only to find out the hard way that your preparations were inadequate. It looks as if he will be fine with those donations coming in. I wish him the best, and I hope all of you can take this experience to heart and learn from it. Cheers. 1

In a word, no. The perception of Brits or others remains the same no matter what. A country that derives most of its income from tourism is never going to discourage foreigners from entering. The only thing that I imagine might change is medical insurance requirements, but those are already in place for certain types of visas like the O-A. But it's doubtful that such insurance requirements would cover major unforeseen catastrophes like this one. If anything, hopefully, stories like this will encourage people to be sure of their own coverage. It certainly gives me pause, although I have a substantial emergency savings fund, which I don't touch, of about 350,000 baht available if needed. Otherwise I actually make very little, about 50,000 baht per month. And I don't drive or own a motorbike.
