BANGKOK (NNT) - The agriculture ministry aims to export no less than 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian to China this year, generating about 100 billion baht of revenue for Thailand.

Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said China is receiving Thai products very well at the moment. This is especially true for durians from Thailand, which are highly popular in the Chinese market and whose popularity has a tendency to grow. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives expects Thailand to export no less than 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian to China during this year’s fruit harvest season in Thailand’s Eastern Region. This would generate an income of about 100 billion baht for the country.

Mr. Anucha noted that the high demand for Thai durian resulted from cooperation between state and private sector organizations. These include durian exporters, Thai-Chinese agricultural products associations, and the Association of Thai Durian Producers. The said entities have worked to control the production process at every step of the way so the produce would be up to standard.

The spokesman added that Thailand’s tourism sector is also receiving a good response from China. He cited China’s Civil Aviation Administration figures pointing to Thailand being among the top 5 destinations for flights departing from China, during April 10-16.

Mr. Anucha said the government is ready to support Thai products and services with good potential so they would be able to compete in the Chinese as well as the global market. A focus will be on maintaining quality and compliance with international standards, which would then result in greater confidence being placed in the products and services.

when working in Sing, we used to order a pallet of Durian and a few boxes of mangosteen. No further work was done  that afternoon

A nice Thai lady, friend of the Mrs, gifted me one yesterday.

Put it near the truck... when I can smell it here in the house, it will be ready to cut!

The more they can export, the better. Just back from a trip to Trad/Chantaburi, where the big fruit warehouses all have Chinese lettering over Thai. There seems to be an enormous glut of durian. Maybe everybody's climbed on the bandwagon? And there seem to be 2 crops this year. Is that usual?

PLEASE send them more!!

ALL of it!

But no need to send many more Chinese the other way...

Just saw recently a sign in Pattaya: "No spitting in this place. Fine: 2,000 baht". Reminded me of many such signs in Hong Kong, reminding visitors from the mainland to control their saliva flow...

Here in Hawaii it used to be that only frozen durian was available.  Now locally grown durian is often seen in farmers markets.  Bought one last week.  It happened to be an unnamed variety, but was of excellent quality. The price was about the same we paid in Chanthaburi this past February.   Grafted and seedling trees are also available.  One nursery is offering grafted named varieties for $100.  Seedling trees go for $35.

The price of Durian keeps raising every year because the Chineese are buying loads of it.....I bet 200 baht a kilo will be the price soon...

Don't knock it.

Huge for the local Chanthaburi economy, and in terms of Thailand's exports, durian value exceeds those of rice and rubber.

Durian 187 billion baht, compared to 100 billion baht for rice exports and 90 billion baht for rubber.
