No one really does... They are as unpopular as visitors in Oz and NZ, as they are in Hong Kong. (Probably in more places so, but for the places I named I know it as a fact

add Paris and Chicago to the list

In our Moo Baan, a retired Chinese couple rented a large house near us, she was always pottering in the garden, he was older and sat on the porch most days, they were model neighbours.

They went back to China in Feb 2020 for Chinese New Year.

They haven't been seen or heard of since, their car is rotting away, unwashed, in the driveway.

Probably fell on hard economic times during the pandemic, with no money for a flight and holiday down south...

The not coming Chinese groups are compensated by the arrivals of the Russians, so TAT has no problem with their figures

The 2021 population of Russia is 143.4 million.

External passports issued in 2022 is 3.87 million (fun fact, they still need internal passports too!)

The best guess population of China is 100 million under the claimed 1.4 billion.

The percentage of Russians in Thailand, and there are many other options for them in Asia, doesn't even begin to make up for China's declining figures.

1. None of the issues existing before Covid were ever addressed. Typical Thai style. These goons in charge won't take responsibility for anything.

2. Many economies have been devastated, and Thailand's tourist base of primarily lower income Indians, Chinese and Malaysians were hardest hit.

3. Thailand cannot and will not attract wealthy or even affluent tourists, for a dozen good reasons. No sacrifices are being made, to make Thailand more appealing to them.

4. Thailand is a nation in reverse. It is moving backwards, and represents the polar opposite of progress on countless levels. It is simply NOT becoming a better version of itself. The environment, traffic and public safety, horrific law enforcement, corruption, air quality, etc. Add to that heinous luxury and wine taxes, and you have an environment wealthy tourists avoid like the plague.

5. You cannot shut down the entire tourism industry for nearly 2 years, decimate the nightlife, hotels, restaurants and countless related businesses, engage in a very poorly planned vaccination program, create a climate of fear and panic, and then just expect because you open your doors again, millions will flood in. The world does not work like that.

6. Thailand is NOT the center of the known universe. It is becoming less relevant by the minute. Tourists are forgetting Thailand. Thailand needs foreigners 100x more than they need Thailand.

I could go on and on and on. The goons just do not get it. At all.

I agree and in one sentence.. Thailand has no clue about the tourists and its industry, because they always came and they didn't need to do any effort for them, but now times have changed already before the Covid, and they did not adjust only because they don't understand tourists and therefor they have killed the goose with the golden eggs. Now they have rebuild tourism, but they don't know how and all the measures are more scaring off than welcoming.

Chinese tour groups in Thailand is still low

Maybe this is the reason (from ATTA):

Thailand’s requirement for Chinese tour groups to apply for individual visas, instead of group visas as in the past, may discourage prospective visitors from China, the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has warned......... Starting from May 8 (2023), every Chinese tourist is required to apply for an individual visa to Thailand, with no exception.

Lately it seems like there is a dearth of tourists of any nationality around Pattaya suddenly. The more popular WS bars were half empty last week and soi 6 bars have few customers tonight even for a Saturday night. More girls than I have ever seen and most of them are complaining about lack of customers.

Thailand is on a list maintained by the Chinese government - it's not a good list.

There's some very weird stuff happening over the last few months :

It's not clear if this is nationwide or just in a handful of places......

"Local police stations are carrying out strict review processes for people leaving China, particularly if they're going to Thailand, Cambodia or other Southeast Asian countries,"

Thank you for sharing this, it's really worrisome the way individual freedoms are crushed in a dictatorship such as China.

Good article, but I looked at the source and found out this from Google.  ????

Here we go again:

Between January and May 18, Thailand welcomed 1 million Chinese tourists, following China’s border reopening, a government official reported. The Thai government is optimistic about achieving its target of five million Chinese visitors this year, with an expected spending of 446 billion baht.

Thailand is about like China , you really don't know what is going on. You cannot believe a word of the news coming out of China or Thailand.  No telling what happened to them.
