The Progressive Liquor Bill, which aims to create fairer rules for small and community-based alcohol producers in Thailand, resurfaced in public discussions after being mentioned in a memorandum of understanding signed by eight parties looking to form a coalition government. The bill, proposed by the Move Forward Party (MFP), narrowly lost approval in the House of Representatives last year by two votes.

Thai Marijuana tycoons ponder mixed messaging from the Move Forward-led coalition on the drug

Newly established Thai marijuana tycoons in the fast-growing and profitable industry, licensed by the government, are worried. Last week, they got an assurance from Move Forward’s Deputy Leader Sirikanya Tansakul that their business concerns would not face closure in the decisive action the eight-party coalition has promised to take to rein in and control the cannabis free for all seen throughout Thailand driven by the illegal recreational use of the drug which is currently unrestricted by the Royal Thai Police due to a legal vacuum. All this may change when the drug is, again, listed as an illegal narcotic by the Ministry of Public Health.


Move Forward deputy leader has given an assurance to operators licenced by authorities in respect of marijuana or cannabis that their businesses will not be closed down by the new government’s promise to control the widespread use of the drug in public and again outlaw its recreational use.

Phuket set to be a new model for food waste disposal

With the Phuket tourism industry well on the way to recovery and aiming to welcome 12 million tourist arrivals this year, the problem of food waste is seen as an increasingly critical issue. In an effort to reduce that waste, the Thai Organic Consumer Association (TOCA) is working with hotels in Phuket to initiate a food waste composting system, which is in line with the BCG (Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model).
