The constitution for senate appointments is only a transitory provision and has to be amended by the next government. The provision task the NCPO to select and appoint the senators after the coup. NCPO has been dissolved making the amendment mandatory. Moreover all the appointments will expire next year. The new civilian government will defintely right this wrong and amend for elected senators.

Sorry but it won't happen. In order to amend the Constitution, it is required to have the agreement of at least one third of the Senate and at least 20% of MPs from each political party.

So the next Senate will be selected by committees and panels (in which representatives of agencies will hold the majority of votes). Who will select these committees? The EC, which has been selected by the NCPO.

So a constitutional amendment then?

Will be interesting to see how this amendment is done as it requires a signigicant change in the constitution which in turn requires approval from the Senate. But what if the Senate doesn't exist if all are Senators required to retire beforehand? Especially with very little time remaining for the new government to be installed.

Thanks. IMO those impasse by both houses were big obstacles for the opposition coalition 2 years ago. They did mount an attempt to amend and even got to the 3rd and final reading last year before they were denied by the joint votes. I think the dynamics have definitely change after the election. The MFP coalition has more votes and only require some from the junta votes to cross over. Perhaps amend after all the senators term expire. It will be elected senators for sure.

As I wrote in my post, after the current senators term expire, according to the current constitution (which cannot be amended without at least one third of Senate vote), the new senators will be selected by committees, the members of these committees being selected by the EC.. That's how it has been designed: appointed people appoint each other, without leaving the opportunity for elected people to interfere in the process.

So the new Senate will likely be controlled by the yellow/green establishment.

(1/2) Caretaker PM Gen Prayut reiterates Thurs he won't be vacating the army villa in Bangkok inside a military base after his PM term ends as he was a former Army Chief. Prayut's reaction came after Pheu Thai Party calls for him to leave the taxpayers-funded villa.

(2/2) Prayut said while he has his personal house, he doesn't feel safe and anyone wanting him out will have to change the army's regulations.

Maybe Prayut can move in with one of his dictator buddies.

Hmmmm. Where have I heard this before?

Do all wanna-be dictators read the same operations manual or what? "Government Overthrow for Dummies"?
