A Thai man was killed and another injured when a Buddha statue they were transporting from Baan None Kate Temple in the northeastern province of Si Saket toppled over them. Residents believe the fatal accident occurred because the Buddha spirits did not want the statue to be moved.

Baan None Kate Temple was preparing to hold a royal cremation ceremony for a respected monk named Kliang Teachadhammo so, the temple hired workers and encouraged locals in the area to help clean the area in preparation for the ceremony.

Two locals, Saranyou Kanyamai and Adisak Chartsai, yesterday were helping monks move the 200 kilogrammes Buddha statue when the statue topped over them while they tried to put it on a six-wheel truck.

Witnesses rushed to rescue the two victims from beneath the weighty statue but Saranyu was pronounced dead at the scene while Adisak sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Doesnt look big enough to kill.

200Kg! That's no lightweight and a difficult shape to handle as well. A house brick is heavy enough to kill if it catches you right.

4 man job moving it. Don't stand directly underneath. How hard can it be?

scary that humans can still think and believe in this manner.

maybe next time the spirits could break an ankle or something less lethal to let them know not to move the statue ?

Quaint and a bit unusual to the western mind I'll grant you, but why scary?

Your suggestion that the spirits could 'break an ankle' indicates that you're subconsciously buying into their quaint beliefs. ????

Looking at its shape and size and knowing its weight, it's likely that it was not possible to maneuver it onto the truck in the 'perfect' manner you suggest. A fork lift truck was the best and safest solution.

what does the western mind have to do with silly beliefs ? its scary because it can be equated to actually believing in santa clause.

did the spirits posses you making that comment about my ankle ? it was meant to be a stupid funny joke that was clearly too complicated.

ho ho ho

The only people who believe in Santa Claus are young kids who are being lied to by their elders. I don't see any connection with spirits.

My 2nd paragraph was also a stupid funny joke. Ho ho ho!

Or a trolley. Same weight as a fridge.

How does a trolley help them in getting it up onto a 6 wheeler, which is getting on 2 meters high?

Or a Hi-Ab crane or Tail lift all easily available.

Will you please stop being so pedantic? I've seen Thais in action for many years now and they will use whatever comes to hand to get the job done, If they ain't got the ideal tool, then they'll use whatever else they have. If they have nothing to hand then they'll resort to muscle power.

They don't summons the Abbot (in this case) and say: 'Sorry guv' but according to H & S rules we can't lift this'. They'll just get on with the task. And sometimes, sadly it goes wrong.

No problem, blame the spirits.

And cost money. This was a temple event, not a construction job.

Thais have wood planks everywhere. They use pulleys etc all the time.

Spirits are often to blame for "accidents" - some of them come in bottles.

No doubt a great many more than than the 'temple' inspired versions.
