Foodpanda Shutting Down
From an article on LinkedIn:- After 13 years operating in Thailand, Foodpanda has announced its exit by May 23, 2025. Despite being the first food delivery app available across all 77 provinces, the company consistently struggled financially, accumulating losses of around 13.36 billion baht (approximately $399 million) between 2019 and 2023. Failing to ever make an annual profit. Market dominance remained elusive, with Foodpanda capturing just under 15% of market share, trailing behind strong competitors like Lineman Wongnai (44%) and GrabFood (39.4%). Attempts to find a buyer, including discussions with major players such as Grab and Meituan, ultimately fell through, perhaps sealing their decision to withdraw. Beyond financial struggles, Foodpanda faced significant political and social backlash. A major incident in July 2021, where the company controversially labeled a protesting rider a "terrorist," sparked a widespread boycott under the hashtag hashtag#แบนfoodpanda (hashtag#BanFoodpanda), resulting in around 2 million app deletions and numerous restaurant partnerships dissolving overnight. Additionally, Foodpanda faced labour disputes, notably in Chiang Mai in August 2021, where riders protested sudden pay cuts, further deteriorating public relations and workforce morale. Their aggressive approach, charging high fees to restaurants while heavily discounting to attract consumers, also strained key relationships and drew criticism. Anecdotally, the user base seemed to be pretty much exclusively expats, a tiny fraction of the market in Thailand, with most Thais preferring Lineman or Grab. This was mainly down to Foodpanda having English menus from day one, something Grab didn’t achieve until many years later and still hasn’t fully adopted. However, once their rivals started offering English-language options, a lot of Foodpanda’s loyal customer base moved over. Foodpanda’s exit highlights crucial lessons about navigating a competitive market, appealing to the local demographic, being culturally and politically in tune, and the importance of balancing aggressive growth with long-term sustainability. -

Hua Hin Beach
Hi, Juts use Grab, 75THB, go to Takiep Beach ! 10 mn drive. Very nice sandy beach, umbrella & chairs, beach restaurant, beach coffee/coktail bar, wild, the best spot in Hua Hin. And no horses every 2mn walking in front of you. (1 or 2 are still around) Phil. -

Report IKEA Goes Cashless at Key Thai Stores Amid Mixed Reactions
Well, I can never be sure if they have grandchildren, but slow people? quite often. Quite a few people seem to struggle with it. I prefer the system in the UK where you just hold the card up to the machine. Tap and Go. Far superior to the QR code phone app nonsense. Those same 'characters' who are slow to use their QR code, are also slow to get their purse or wallet out and then dig for cash - I don't think QR or digital payments change that... They are the same 'type of person' who get to their front door, then dig around for their keys !!!! The 'Tap and Go' system exists in Thailand now.... and I agree, its better than the QR system. Showing your bias again. Yes... I did highlight that in my comment when I wrote: <<That might be my bias but I find it much quicker anywhere I've used QR payment... >> Which was my main point. I am not against Tap and Go, but cash needs to remain an option. 100% agree - thats been my point all along - no need for weak arguments and flawed anecdote. Strawman. I'm not against digital payments (if they are implemented right). I actually like Monzo cards where you can put a couple of hundred quid on it for a night out and so if you lose it then it's no big deal, unlike losing a bank a credit card. I am against removing cash as an option. As am I - I'm also for using balanced well through out arguments in support or against an option and find many of the anti-digital payment arguments quite broken and flawed thats all, they can be countered so easily that they weaken a point rather than strengthen it. -

Bank proof of money in the bank
No, it's depending of the immigration office. I'm staying on extension of stay based on retirement, and the immigration office that extends my stay every year asks for three month bank statement... However, if you use the monthly transfer of minimum 65,000 baht method, you need statements for all previous 12 months...
