Long before the advent of PCs and mobile phones, let alone Anki, my father adopted a rather more scattergun approach to extending his vocabulary.  

 On winter nights, when he couldn't work on his beloved garden, he would simply open his dictionary at a random page and alight upon a word he was unfamiliar with and record both it and its meaning to memory.
