Plan is to rally parliament behind the people’s will to elect Pita Limjaroenrat as Prime Minister

43-year-old Move Forward Party leader Mr Pita Limjaroenrat who is the key contender to become the next Prime Minister when parliament meets on Thursday in joint session held rallies on Sunday with a stirring message directed at politicians and members of both houses of parliament. He urged them to respect the will of 72% of the Thai people represented by the eight-party coalition in parliament that will support his candidacy for the job.

Even as Mr Pita rallied his audiences on Sunday and addressed a message of unity to all politicians in parliament, there came another challenge against him from his arch critic Mr Ruangkrai Leekitwattana of the Palang Pracharat Party seeking to make a complaint about the political leader’s authorship of four books and asking the Election Commission if this may be construed as the operation of a newspaper under Thailand’s Printing Recordation Act of 2007.

It is a week in Thai politics in which anything can happen. However, with a clear campaign coming for conservative elements to foil his bid at being elected Prime Minister on Thursday, 43-year-old Mr Pita Limjaroenrat has been rallying momentum to support the May 14th General Election result and the will of the people.

 

The Move Forward Party leadership insists that the votes are there in parliament from among more responsible members of the Senate to elect Mr Pita. It also looks increasingly like the eight-party coalition will not waiver and will maintain its shape no matter what happens in Thursday’s momentous vote, to bring about a truly democratic government and implement the election result.

 

On Monday, reports emerged that one strategy being considered was to repeatedly put Mr Pita’s name before joint sittings of parliament even if his bid to be elected is rejected on Thursday in a campaign to encourage members of the Senate to rally behind the will of the people or to count down the clock until May 2024 when its say in the matter expires under the Constitution in any event.

What irritates me is that the people have clearly stated that they want changes, but that the dinosaurs are doing everything not to accept the choice of the people. They come with media shares, keep investigating as long as possible for a decision, come with new tricks as books now suddenly as media problem.. It seems that even if you appear on TV they can blame you of using the media.. This witchhunt has to be stopped. On the other hand Thursday they hide behind amending section 112. But why is my question.. It is strange that if you kill someone, make terrible traffic accidents, or deal in drugs, the damage to the victims and their families are much bigger than if you do or say something that can be explained as violating section 112 and the punishments are much severe than the " normal" crimes.. Why not accept the cahnge of section 112 or are all senators and MP's blind/?

Better to vote him through, and then use the "System" (courts, commissions) to drive him from office.

 

I mean it took almost zero effort to drive Yingluck from office, by using the Constitutional Court and a dodgy charge about reassigning a security official some three years earlier.

Haven't one or two of them have stated in the murky past the Thai people are like children, they need to be guided, we do what we must.  etc etc.

Their overall opinion of the general voting populace seems to be: inconsequential. Protests and general unrest? sure go ahead, complete our narrative for us and we press the reset button again.

The strategy to repeatedly put forward Pita as PM candidate until term of junta lackey's...sorry, I meant senators.....authority ends, would be unprecedented, unlikely to happen, very problematic no doubt, frustratingly drawn out, do no good to economic stability and so on & so on.......but by golly, if successful would be SUCH a deliciously marvelous payback & lesson to the establishment. One can dream, no?

More likely a few riots, which the Junta will use as an excuse to retain power for the "peace and stability" of Thailand.

 

I don't see them handing power over just because the people have spoken. They have nothing but contempt for the people.

It is a law which allows those in power ( and remember that includes those with "influence" behind the scenes) to basically intern, prosecute and imprison their opponents, to remove them from the political arena. It offers a veneer of respectability to what is basically good old fashioned political suppression.

 

That is why MFP is hell bent on reforming it, and the old guard are equally determined to keep it.

 

If the Senate block and the quasi-legal machinations fail to prevent Pita and MFP coming to power, it will be used to pick them off over the next year until they are gone.

Hoping MF will not rely on the constitution alone to end coups but create a law stating the death penalty for coup makers. Then another dozen laws regarding misuse of state funds (the military belongs to the state) and ancillary laws that can’t be quashed easily.

I think too... If Pita is not election wit the reason as he wants to amend  section 112 .. a massive ignoring of section 112 will coming...The damage will be much worse than make him PM. He and his party can't only change section 112 as the need a majority too, but to shoot someone off already before he has done anything is undemocratic and childish

Caretaker PM Office Minister Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Tuesday if Pita Limjaroenrat fail to get the minium vote needed to become PM on Thursday another name should be submitted the week after and not Pita's name anew.

100% correct,    Thai peole are apathetic, sure there will be protests but not tens of thousands be a few hundred after a couple of day, zero all forgotten, that is the thai way. Remember the thai people voted for this constution.

I will be very supprised if he get in. (hope he does) but Thai Laws, like virtually all Thai laws, always have some vagueness so that they can be "interpreted" (anyone ever visit Thai immigration?). The EC was appointed by the Junta and will always find something to question based on their "interpretation" of the rules. Moreover, they'll take their sweet time in doing so against an opposition candidate as every day after the election goes by, the sense of momentum of the winning, Pro-Democracy side wanes just a little. Finally, after they have done their best to blunt a sense of momentum, they'll refer the case to the courts out of an abundance of caution and he will be stopped.

Thai's never follow through. look at Payut found guilty in chang mai courts, nothing will happen.

Palang Pracharath Party and the 3 million donation  nothing to be forgoten

Thailand needs to clean its act up in the eyes of the world  nothing will happen, but who cares Iam just a dirty Falang.

Protests began in October 2013 - 8 months before the coup.

 

There were 28 deaths and 800 casualties

 

The Thai courts reputation was once and for all, utterly destroyed

 

Corporations paid billions of baht to Suthep to fund the PDRC protests

 

All of this and the coup still almost failed

That same Court could do the same with Pita, with little effort.

The one meeting that I am paying attention will be the EC to discuss whether they have sufficient evidence to forward the case to the Constitution Court. Time is running out for the EC to forward the case before 13 July voting for Prime Minister. If the court accept the case for consideration, it will affect voting on 13 July. It will be reason for senators to abstain from voting and also assert pressure on senators who consider voting for Pita. If EC do not forward the case, the voting chance for Pita will be brighter.

I would be very concerned also. Pita can,  not only read but also write, He might even be able to count up to ten without using his fingers, a clear indication that he is not only fit to serve , as a PM but in any capacity.

The man has an evaducation, what other evidence does anyone need ?

Also it has been reported that he is a homosapien, and his sister is a well nor thespian.

If the Constitution Court accept the case after 13 July based on Section 151 of the Election Law for holding shares in a media company, the criminal procedures will involved many steps and can take months and years. If he is found quity for breaching the law, it can mean prison time and ban politically for an extensive period. The government will simply appoint a Prime Minister to take his place. The key date will be 13 July and if EC could not forward the case to the Court, the senators will be less pressured to abstain or vote no.
