The Move Forward Party has made a political retreat by agreeing to support a candidate from the Pheu Thai Party for prime minister, when parliament meets in a joint sitting again next Thursday, its secretary general Chaithawat Tulathon said this morning (Friday).

He said Pheu Thai has yet to decide formally who it will nominate for Thailand’s top executive post.  Srettha Thavisin, a well-known real estate tycoon, is now seen as Pheu Thai’s most likely choice.

Speaking at a press conference, Chaithawat said Move Forward still stands by the MOU signed with seven other parties in forming the post-election coalition.

Hmm, interesting.

Some backpedalling and skullduggery going on indeed.

No direct comment from the "party leader" on the matter either.

It is so very interesting to see the real-world results of the junta constutionally rigging the senate.

A outcome similar to this was obvious to me, Move Forward's outright victory and brutal slap down and Prayut scurrying into the background were not.

If PT has the support of MFP, it will be unacceptable to the Senate. They've already said, no MFP involvement. Can't see how parliament can keep functioning in that case. It's completely unconstitutional. The coalition should petition the CC to stop the Senate meddling in the lower House's affairs. That isn't their remit. Sure, they unfortunately get to vote, but that's the end of it. They don't get to set policy, vet members or any of the other actions they're crossing boundaries to do. Way out of order. But Thailand seems devoid of any procedures to prevent this happening. Where are the checks and balances that work in the people's favour, not just the elitist hysterical screaming queens in the Senate?

First get the junta out and then next May the senators. That is the priority. Once that happens the 112 can be amended.

Yep, just get in THEN change the rules, just like the Cjunta did. Just this time for more freedom, not less. The cards are stacked so need to zig zag, as Thais are fond of saying ????

This is laughable.

MF will support a PM candidate that will not touch section 112. But we're willing to hamper their own PM nomination by insisting on section 112 amendment.

If amendment of section 112 is such  a principle stance within MF how can they support a PM candidate that has stated they will not touch section. 112

It's called politics my friend.  The one guarantee is that no politician will keep their word when their job is on the line.

The ones who would, sadly, are rarely the ones who get elected.

I'm loving it.  Very smart move politically by FF.  By supporting PT, it forces the senators to once again either vote for or against democracy.  Vote for or against the will of the voters.  Once again, they will be squirming, with all the focus, mostly negative, on them.  Either way they vote, FF wins.  If they vote yes, FF can remain aligned with PT and work together with the other coalition partners.   A PT prime minister, while not ideal, is better than any of the dinosaurs as PM.

If the senators vote no and the PT candidate doesn't win, PT can always put forward another name in the next round of voting, forcing the senators once again into a squirming position.  More delay is not good for the country or the economy--making the senators look even worse, and even more unpopular.  Thwarting democracy over and over makes Thailand look bad--and I think the junta does care about what the world thinks of it.  Again, FF wins.   If the dinosaurs somehow secure the PM post, FF and PT can oppose any government initiatives they dislike, while also advancing their proposals.
