Advice needed please.

Is a three year Diploma from a South African institution acceptable for a Teaching Licence or is a University Degree the only acceptable qualification?

Possibly. Depends on where, who and what you're teaching. Also new rules (although not 100% enforced at the moment) also require you to have a TEFL/TESOL/TESL certificate.

PM me if you'd like any advice!

Good luck.

Not that it should matter but what is the name of the South African Institution?

I ask this part out of some research I have been doing and also part of is there any reason why first the school where you gain employment would not readily accept a qualification from this Sth A Institution and secondly would there be any reason the MoE may not accept the same?

You may gain more feedback on this from ww.ajarn.com abut also be prepared for some smart arsed wisecracks from some of the so called learned brigade. :o

Thanks very much for the information Kenkaniff. I asked on behalf of a TEFL trainee (I am a TEFL trainer), who I think has subsequently sent you a PM.

Mijan, I am not sure why or why not a school looking for an English teacher might discount a Diploma from one institution and not another. Having said that, not all Diplomas are equal, but neither are Degrees for that matter.

Will have a look on Ajarn and see if I can find out more about the acceptability of Diplomas, as the majority of students who do the TEFL course at the Institute I work for have Diplomas and not Degrees. This does rule out employment in many countries, but I am not sure to what degree this might rule out Thailand as a teaching destination.

Thanks again for the replies.

My understanding is that Diploma/Degree or Neither usedto be the go in Thailand a lot depending upon the particular schools need. Currently with teachers licenses, work permits and new minimal wage levels, there is a lot confusion in the education industry. The new term Education Consultant is being referred to by some employing authorities.

One of the reasons behind the question on the particular South African University is that it is up to the indiviual school/institution or universitie to accept or not accept qualifications presented and being honest if there is a hesitancy to name the origin of the qualifications then there would naturally be a hesitancy to accept the qualifications.

I am not questioning you or the trainee you purportedly represent just passing on the perception one gains when "it is a question for someone else" and no name of the organisation that awarded the qualifications. (The lack of detail does not allow for a comprehensive response).

If someone was to post: I currently hold a Diploma in OH&S from the National Safety Council of Australia, will this allow me to teach in Thailand?

A simple answer can be provided. of yes or no or maybe as TiT unfortunately the highlighted red is not in jest, as rules in Thailand are applied by the individual not uniformaly as one normaly expects.
