The Move Forward party has suspended a member of Pita Limjaroenrat’s security detail, after online investigators revealed that he, Srisuriyane Srikamonpakdi, has been convicted of kidnapping and blackmail and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2011.

Secretary general Chaithawat Tulathon said another bodyguard has already been assigned to Pita, while the party conducts a thorough background check on Srisuriyane.

Chaithawat said that, being from a contractor, the party neither knew of nor checked his background.

After the history of Srisuriyane went viral, supporters of Move Forward offered moral support, referring to him as “Brother Ton”.

I believe in second-chances, but this looks bad. Kidnapping and blackmail. A twelve year sentence in 2011 means he's been out what ~ 5 years?

That said, maybe Pita didn't do the hire, but rather depended on someone else to handle that task. If so, I might fire that person.

Given the villains most of the regime and politicos have on speed dial this one is bad, but not overly alarming, IMO.

Obviously the contractor didn't do too much back-ground checking when hiring labour.

Chaithawat said that, being from a contractor, the party neither knew of nor checked his background. (Someone else's fault, as always in Thailand)

And from the linked report: Supisarn claimed that he has not yet met Srisuriyane in person, but saw him from afar and thought he was a former police officer by his appearance. (That's okay then. He looked right).

The more I read about the Move Forward Party the more I think they have the collective mind of a child. First, the fiasco of Pita not declaring his shares, leaving the door wide open to ban him from politics. Now a convict who was sentenced to 12 years in jail is given a role as part of his security detail, no vetting by the Party done for such a high security position. You just couldn't make it up.

1. The party hired a specialist contractor to vet and provide security guards.

2. The specialist contractor is fully responsible that is what they are paid for

3. Pita Limjaroenrat never met the guy

4. The party acted quickly and decisively once they were notified

5. This man posed a threat to Pita Limjaroenrat because he could have been blackmailed into providing security information to enemies or worse could have been an assassin

6. I note that the incompetent specialist contractor who made this cock up has not been named so that no other person hires them in the future
