Surprised that Liam is now the most popular baby boy's name in the U.S. and also ...

Ecuador and Peru?!?

Why is this happening?

Liam is an Irish origin name.

Clearly it's much more than Irish origin Americans using this name.

Ever more curious, Ecuador and Peru?

If I had to guess, I would have guessed Juan for the USA and certainly a more Latino name for Ecuador and Peru.

maybe because Darkman with Liam Neeson is finally getting the recognition it deserves as one of the best super-hero films of all time.

Yeah I thought of that but hadn't realized he was that big of a star as to influence the most popular baby boy name.

Don't get me wrong. Liam is a very nice name.

Also, it's really great that it's not Donald.

More like Liam Hemsworth for that child bearing peer group.

Could be but to me it's such an Irish name that I still find it's popularity odd.

What's next?

Paddy?

Cillian?

Yes. But Liam is an Irish name regardless.

Are these non Irish background Liams going to feel pressure to learn about Irish culture?

Is it of Irish origin? Or, is it a shortening of the name William (English). King William of England is/was a significant character in Irish history.

But, most likely (IMO) its popularity in the USA is due to film/TV stars or characters named Liam. I don't know enough about USA to name any USA Liams, but Liam Neeson has been a popular and macho film star for a while.

20 years from now, in the US, the names will mainly be of spanish origin.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

It was a good movie, but the best superhero ever?

I'm more of a Shrek and Despicable Me fan.  If I ever have sons they will be named Shrek and Gru.
