Narathiwat provincial police will seek a warrant for the arrest of the owner of the fireworks warehouse, which was destroyed by an explosion and fire last week, after he failed to report to the police yesterday (Tuesday). An intelligence report indicates that the owner and his wife fled to Malaysia last Saturday, the day of the explosion.

An informed police source said they issued a second summons yesterday afternoon, after the owner, whose name was not disclosed by the police, did not report to police in Muno sub-district at 10am yesterday as required.

The source also said that, if the warehouse owner fails to show up again, the police will seek a warrant for his arrest.

Malaysian police will be asked to help in tracking down thecouple who own the fireworks warehouse that exploded last Saturday, after it was reported that they had fled to Malaysia, according to Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, Thailand’s deputy national police chief.

Meanwhile, it is reported that a non-commissioned traffic police officer in Muno sub-district has been transferred to the operations centre of Narathiwat provincial police after beingaccused of taking bribes from operators of illegal businesses in the sub-district.

During his on-site inspection in Muno sub-district yesterday (Wednesday), Pol Gen Surachate offered his condolences to the families of people who were killed in the incident, those who were injured and people whose houses were damaged by the force of the explosion last Saturday.

I wonder how many similar warehouses there are in in other regions?  Anyone who's been to Bangsean at night, for example, will have heard the continuous fireworks until dawn.  They are sold by a 'beach vendor mafia', who I doubt will have safe or licenced warehouse for the fireworks.

Fireworks explosion in Narathiwat linked to local smuggling network

Narathiwat witnessed a tragic incident recently as a fireworks storehouse exploded. The owners of the premises, a couple, Sompong Nakul and Piyanuch Peungwirawat, both 42 years old, are believed to have fled to Malaysia, according to the local police following the unfortunate fireworks explosion. There are also reports that their trade has connections with significant figures in the southern Thai province.

News of their absence emerged when Pol Maj Gen Anurut Im-arb, the Chief of Police in Narathiwat, revealed that the couple has failed to turn themselves in to the authorities. The summoning was a result of the fireworks depot blast on July 29, in Tambon Muno, causing destruction on a large scale; 12 lives were lost, 121 people sustained injuries, and approximately 292 houses were severely damaged.

A credible source has revealed that the duo is supported by local politicians involved in a network of smuggling various items; liquor, cigarettes, narcotics, and workers, alongside fireworks.

Around seven years back, in 2016, the alleged offenders were apprehended for unlawful storage and sale of 60 tonnes of fireworks and other inflammable substances without a proper licence. Subsequently, the case was never filed in the provincial court by the prosecutor.
