An investigating committee has advised the Election Commission (EC) to dismiss the alleged violation of election law charges against Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party. The charges centered around accusations that Pita held shares in the media firm iTV while filing his candidacy for the May 14 general election.

An EC official revealed that the committee’s investigation found insufficient evidence to conclusively prove that iTV was operational and generating income during the period when Pita submitted his election candidacy in early April.

The committee underscored the requirement, as per Section 151 of the Election Act, for unambiguous and irrefutable proof of Pita’s continued ownership of shares in the media company in order to disqualify him from the election.

Better to drop the charges and nominate him.

It will avoid further eventual social unrest that will discourage many tourists and foreigners to come and spend money-monnie in Thailand.

That's not how a show trial works. Is there talk of disturbance if they put pita behind bars, they would rather not deal with ?. this election happened in may didn't it. Might be time for a new one

Hm the title says the EC advises but the article says the EC was advised by a commitee. Does not seem like it's a final conclusion, the case is ongoing. But I guess it's a strong indicator that the EC case will not end against Pita? Not that it matters all too much, his chance for PM is gone. I guess he could act as a MP if the EC and Constitutional Court clear him but that's of limited value.

Hey there, hoopla, the circus is in town

They have disposed of the immediate threat Pita and the Move Forward Party posed to their hegemony.

However, by ignoring and frustrating the votes of a large proportion (arguably a majority if you count MFP and Pheu Thai together) they have opened a vary large can of worms, over which they will eventually lose control.

They still have the tanks and guns which have proved decisive in the past, so I am not gonna hold my breath on that one.

Pita's case is still up at the Constitutional Court (forwarded to CC by the EC).

Would have been great if the EC could have done their investigation before the May 14th election!
