Voice referendum: Lies fuel racism ahead of Australia's Indigenous vote

"People have been let off the leash," Thomas Mayo says quietly, swiping through screenshots.

Racist memes depicting First Nations Australians as "grifters", "wife beaters" and "primitives" flash across his phone.

Then, personal threats appear - accusing him of "providing cover for evil".

Mr Mayo is one of the public faces of the Yes campaign in Australia's historic Voice to Parliament referendum, to be held on 14 October.

If successful, the vote will change the nation's constitution for the first time in 46 years, creating a body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to advise the government on policies affecting their communities.

Opinion polls had long shown support for the change but now suggest the No vote is leading.

 

Though some argue the shift reflects public sentiment, Yes campaigners blame it on an ecosystem of disinformation - which they say is being led by figures in the No camp and "amplified" by suspicious accounts on social media.

Independent experts say the most "pernicious" and pervasive falsehoods "spreading like wildfire" online concern race.

Amid all the noise, concerns are growing over the mental health of First Nations communities, who find themselves at the centre of an increasingly divisive debate.

And questions are again being raised over whether Australia is ready to grapple with the open wounds at the heart of its nationhood.

Well blow me down with a feather.

 

Who could have imagined that a proposal which divides the nation based on race would be problematic. Who would have thought that undermining the current Democratic principles for certain racial/ethic groups would inflame tensions? Who would have thought that adding race to the constitution would be so controversial?

 

Maybe we could send Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, race-baiter extraordinaire over there to really stir the pot in the build up to the vote? She's done a fantastic job in the UK.

Thailand government is a classic example of too many cooks spoil the broth, and of how many can differ on progress. More unlikely as most referendums in Australia, this will fail, bar anthem, and the divide remains unchanged, regardless of the constant hype surrounding, indigenous and fair. Given at every bend, little progress. This is just more hot air and associated waste of tax payer dollars, again. Thanks Aussie pollies.

Correct, is there a problem with first nation people - yes, but changing the constitution won't fix it, any / all problems can be sorted by the right approach and consultation without all the B S  about constitution changes.

I haven't seen the memes, but calling someone a grifter or a wife beater is not racist it is a generic term and could apply to someone of any race.

 

Primitive might have racist connotations, depending on the context but I'd have to see the meme. Some people just see racism everywhere. If I asked them if they wanted their coffee black or with milk they'd try and lock me up.

 

Either way, some idiot making a comment on social media which may or may not be racist does not justify making racism part of the constitution by having specific bodies that can consist only of people from a specific race advising the government on policies regarding their specific race. That is pretty much the definition of racism.

 

Identity politics is for far left agitators. It's primarily based on racism, sexism and gender ideology. Australia should stay well clear of it unless they want the type of issues the UK and US is currently experiencing with racial tensions and misguided gender ideology.

I lived in Australia full time from 97-98 and have worked there sporadically (average once a year) since 2003.

 

It's one of the most racially diverse and tolerant countries I've ever been to. Race baiters trying to destroy that is pretty low IMO.

Maybe if the govt came clean and told the whole truth instead of their doctored garbage, this has nothing to do with racism but in honesty, why are so many aboriginals against it if it going to be good for them. The uluru statement is over 20 pages long, not one page as is being pushed but it includes what is really wanted and that is what the govt doesnt want people to know, even the ones involved in its writing have stated this fact but have changed it in the last months to comply with the govt. The govt currently wastes billions as has been shown many times, the corruption that is ingrained into the aboriginal groups doesnt help but anyone that does not agree with the govt and those pushing this garbage are listed as racists when all they want it the truth and not the lies and innuendo being pushed. I lived and worked with aboriginals for a few years and had many I regarded as great mates, problem is many of those commenting have never had the priveledge of spending time with aboriginals and have no idea of the truth that revolves around them, last thing Australia needs is a constitution that seperates its people.

Quantify “so many aboriginals” - is it a majority that are opposed? Where did you get your data from?
