Nancy Pelosi: Democrat and ex-Speaker, 83, to seek re-election

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, says she will seek re-election next November.

Mrs Pelosi, 83, was first elected to her San Francisco district in 1987, before serving two terms as speaker between 2007-2011 and 2019-2023.

She led House Democrats for two decades before standing down as leader after Republicans won last year's election.

Her decision to run again is sure to reignite debate about the age of US political leaders.

"Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery," Ms Pelosi wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for re-election - and respectfully ask for your vote."

Mrs Pelosi is the first woman in US history to serve as speaker of the House and has played a critical role in advancing - or thwarting - the agendas of multiple presidents.

She is widely credited with marshalling the passage of former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare legislation, as well as bills to address infrastructure and climate change under incumbent President Joe Biden.

F@$&ing Boomers, from all walks of life, simply refuse to step aside. Not happy and content with completely f@$&ing up the economy and the environment during their prime years, they now want to continue flogging the dead horse with their zimmer frames until we pass the point of no return.

Mandatory retirement at 75 for all public positions.

She has had a long storied career it’s time Nancy retire

How about a package deal -- both she and McConnell, both elderly and in poor health, both step aside...

But nah...unfortunately, ain't gonna happen.

"Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell declared again that he plans to finish his term as leader despite freezing up twice at news conferences over the summer, brushing off questions about his health as he sought to reassure colleagues he’s still up ..."

I'd support that, provided it actually meant ALL...including the Supreme Court.

Absolutely.

I’d also include publicly traded companies.

She wants to advocate "San Francisco  values "... good lord. Poop in the streets,  violence,  homeless bums everywhere,  skyrocketing retail theft?

Go home. Fix your community.

The city has always had a dark underbelly as do all large cities unfortunately the drug problem (I think that’s what you are alluding to )is a worldwide problem  so I’m just going to chalk that up to another slur all that being said she should quit while she is ahead it’s time .mr Jeffery’s as minority leader seems to be doing a fine job.time to pass the torch madam speaker

Another geriatric US politician too selfish and egotistical to step aside and let new blood come through.

I guess she still wants that insider information on stock trades. It's never enough for these greedy champagne socialists.

Nothing like a bit of raging ageism to get your bike up of a morning.

Since when was Pelosi a socialist of any flavor?

Are getting your catchphrases mixed up in the wrong threads?

How so, Pelosi isn’t even a baby boomer.

But do let your hate flow, it makes your arguments so much more compelling.

You need to sit a medical assessment and driving or riding assessment to keep your licence after a certain age.

Public office should be the same as driving licences - prove your fitness after a certain age.

Pelosi, Feinstein, McConnel, Biden and Trump should all be in a nursing home not running the country into the ground.

None of them are running the country into the ground. Although one have it his best shot until voters put a stop to him.

Really, the country is being run into the ground? Is Biden's legislation not supported by a majority of the people in the country? Maybe you should focus on age less and on policies more.

You don’t think America is being mismanaged? ????????????

The country is at a crossroads akin to 1968.

The Democrats are garbage; the only ones who make any sense - Bernie and AOC, are sidelined by their own party. And the Republicans…these nutters are so bad they make the Democrats seem halfway decent.

The future looks incredibly grim which is bad news for the entire free world.

You were doing okay until you mentioned AOC.  Not great, but OK.  Then, you lost it...

Bernie, I like.  Though I disagree with him a lot.

If you don't like what they're doing to those 2, look at what RFK Jr is saying about his primary struggles.  Scary.

Really?!?!now we all know Biden is old but president Biden has made progress towards a better future for all with seeding renewables domestically made computer chips revitalizing nato infrastructure lowering drug prices so naaa I ain’t buying your argument it ain’t perfect but it’s forward looking and progress

It’s not so much that he’s old, it’s more the fact that he’s senile.

His team has done well but he will not win re-election if he has to front up to a non Covid lock down election.

Stepping aside for generational change is the best he can do now.
