My phone went missing after a short-time
Now this is an actual true story (not a typical bob smith windup). A few weeks ago, I went short-time with a girl I have gone with a number of times over the last few months. She is not a local, but we have gotten to know each other a little bit, have exchanged WhatsApp, and we text each other sometimes, but I keep my distance. After we left the room, she said her best mate had just texted her and was at a restaurant nearby, so she was going off to meet her friend. We parted ways, and I decided to linger in the hotel lobby for a couple of minutes before hopping on my bike to head home. Then I reached for my phone and realized I did not have it. I mentioned to the people at the desk that I thought I had left the phone in the room, and they said to go upstairs and check because the room had not been cleaned yet. So I ran up there, had a quick look, and did not see it anywhere. Knowing where she was headed, I started running toward the restaurant. It was about a kilometer away. When I got there, I looked around and did not see her. I glanced over all the tables where people were sitting. It was an open air restaurant, and I was about to ask one of the waiters if he had seen a woman matching her description. Then suddenly I noticed them sitting at a table together, her and her friend, and her friend had a customer with her as well. I ran over and told her I could not find my phone and asked to look inside her bag. I do trust her, and I certainly was not accusing her of stealing it. What I was thinking might have happened was that, both of us being a bit buzzed, since she had been drinking and smoking weed and I had smoked a bit too, when we were getting dressed, both of our phones were lying out and maybe she accidentally put mine in her bag. When I realized my phone was not in there after she opened it and showed me what was inside, I said thanks, told her not to worry about it, and was about to leave. She said, “Where are you going?” I said I was going back to the hotel to check again. She said she would go with me, and I insisted it was not necessary because I did not suspect she was involved in any way. I assumed she wanted to go with me to prove her innocence, and maybe she did not want the hotel staff thinking she was a thief either, in case she ever went back there with another customer. I insisted multiple times that she not go with me, but she insisted, and so we went together. When I got back to the hotel, I ran up the stairs to the second floor again where the room was, and the maid was standing in the corridor. She said, “Oh, here is your phone,” and pulled it out of her pocket. She told me I had left it on the headboard, which was a dark color, the same as my phone, so when I went up to look for it earlier, I did not see it. I handed her some cash to thank her for her kindness, then went back downstairs. I took the girl back to the restaurant at that point on my motorbike, which I had left parked at the short time hotel. I drove her back to meet her friend, and when she got off the bike, I gave her the remainder of the cash I had in my pocket for the extra inconvenience. I do not think there were any hard feelings, but I still felt very awkward and was very apologetic to her for her troubles. After she got off the bike and went back into the restaurant, I sat there for a moment, just sitting on my motorcycle before getting ready to head off. Her friend, who had been sitting with her, came running out from the restaurant toward me. I was not sure what she wanted. She just asked me if I got my phone. I said yes, and she said, “Oh, okay,” and went back inside. She was also a bit drunk, and I was not really sure why she came running out, but it seemed like she was just being nice and concerned. Later that evening, I texted the girl to apologize again. Her friend came up in the messages, and she mentioned that her friend had intended to give me a slap in the face. I am glad she did not because I do not know how I would have reacted, but my initial thought had been that her friend was being caring, and it turned out she was not. Her friend apparently thought I was accusing the girl of something she had not done. Also, while the girl and I were texting, she said she was not a thief. I reconfirmed to her that I never suspected she was, and that there was no reason for her to have come back with me to the hotel. I explained that I thought we were a bit tipsy, and maybe my phone ended up in her bag by accident. Either way, it felt like an awkward situation, even though the texting ended on a friendly note. As a result, I do not think I will ever meet up with her again, just because the whole thing felt off. It was nobody’s fault, just a matter of circumstance, but sometimes in life things just go wrong in that way. After decades in Thailand, I have never lost or misplaced my phone in a situation like that, but things can happen. It is a little unsettling when things go from good to bad so quickly, especially when nobody ever had any bad intentions to begin with. An awkward situation for sure, and as a result I do not think I will venture to see her again. -
