Social Media
There are less than five days to go before the US government shuts down and Kevin McCarthy has a choice to make. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives must either find a way for his narrow Republican majority to fund federal agencies or seek the help of Democrats to do so. If he opts for the former, he will likely pass a bill that cannot make it through a Democrat-controlled Senate, practically ensuring a shutdown. But if Mr McCarthy decides on the latter, he is at risk of being ousted from the job that has been the pinnacle of his two decades in politics. Whichever way the California congressman goes, he will have to do it sooner rather than later. If Congress fails to provide funding by midnight on Saturday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed without pay and government services will be disrupted. What happens in a US government shutdown? Republicans leave Washington with shutdown looming On Tuesday, with House negotiations facing an uncertain future, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said a bipartisan group in his chamber was close to finishing work on a short-term funding bill. The House Speaker, however, has not yet committed to bringing that proposal to the floor if his own efforts fail. FULL STORY
Popular Post HappyExpat57
This man has no spine. He made a deal with devils and now the payment has come due. When it took 15 rounds of votes to get him into the speakership, that should have been enough of a clue that his would be a very short ride. Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya. 8

It is a paid vacation; they just won't get paid until after they return to work. Been there, done that. 1

Been there, done that. It’s not that straightforward. My wife was a US federal employee during a shutdown in the 1990s; “essential personnel” still have to go to work, and she was deemed essential. And while pay is deferred only (she and everyone else got all their back pay when the shutdown ended), we had money to cover expenses in the meantime; a lot of federal workers don’t, so it can be hard on them, especially if a shutdown drags on through a couple of missed paychecks. 3
Popular Post Tropposurfer
What a train wreck of a nation. Open sedition and treason by the Republican Party. Complicity in the raping of the nation by the haves of the have-nots, sycophancy, nepotism, and vast impotence by the Democrats. Mass murders almost every day. 10's of thousands of gun murders each year. A completely failed and ludicrous voting system. Senators and House members being bought by lobby groups. A failed, openly corrupt Supreme Court. The vast majority of the People unable to sustain basic living standards. 800 + billion on arms per budget and the People can't afford, what is in every civilised Western nation, basic everyday medication. Danderman123
Given the probability of a shutdown, what will the immediate impacts be? Flying into the US, will Immigration staff be reduced?
Purdey
I had thought the GOP wanted the government out of people's lives. This is an opportunity for states to do without federal assistance, yet the Republicans are not jumping at this chance.

Pelosi is not really in a position to object to people being petty and vindictive - given her history. What goes around, comes around. Hopefully she doesn't let the door hit her on the way out. She step down and was not hit by the proverbial door on the way out like Kevin McCarthy. She passed the leadership to a new generation united unlike the disarray on the other side.
