Despite recent controversy that she should have resigned because of dramatically declining health her long  career was notable.

 

Although a democrat she was a political centrist. 

 

In previous decades her name often came up as potentially the first woman (and Jewish) president.

 

Probably her most iconic moment as Mayor to be of San Francisco replacing the assassinated George Moscone.

 

 

The big question now is who will Gavin appoint to take her seat?
