Biden says simultaneous wars in Ukraine, Israel won’t overwhelm US

President Biden in a new interview dismissed the idea that the United States could not simultaneously support Israel in its war against Hamas and Ukraine in its war against Russia.

“We’re the United States of America for God’s sake, the most powerful nation in the history — not in the world, in the history of the world,” Biden said in a “60 Minutes” interview that aired Sunday. “We can take care of both of these and still maintain our overall international defense.”

 

Biden argued that the two conflicts “overwhelmingly” relate to the safety of the American people.

“In Ukraine one of my objectives was to prevent [Russian President Vladimir Putin], who has committed war crimes himself, who — from being able to occupy an independent country that borders NATO allies and is on the Russian border,” Biden said. “Imagine what happens now if he were able to succeed. Have you ever known a major war in Europe we didn’t get sucked into? We don’t want that to happen.”

“We want to make sure those democracies are sustained. And Ukraine is critical in making sure that happens,” Biden added.

Biden sat down with “60 Minutes” at the White House days after Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, launched terrorist attacks against Israel that left 1,000 Israelis dead. Thousands more Palestinians have been killed in ensuing fighting in Gaza.

More than two dozen Americans were killed in the attacks, and more than a dozen remain unaccounted for.

The Biden administration has moved military assets closer to Israel in support of the Jewish state and has sent munitions and interceptors for Israel’s Iron Dome defense system.

 

At the same time, Congress has provided billions of dollars in military and financial assistance to Ukraine in the roughly 20 months since Russia launched an unprovoked invasion in February 2022.

Biden applied the premature withdrawal agreement made by Trump (who also sabotaged it a bit before leaving).

But it isn't only Hamas that's experiencing what Israel is dishing out, is it? So will the US be killing Lebanese civilians as well as Hezbollah troops? And given that the Israeli response looks like it's going to be an invasion of Gaza, does that mean American troops would be landing in Lebanon?  You don't seem to have given much consideration to what the consequences of such a US response would be. Come to think of it, neither have the supporters of the Israeli invasion of Gaza. Let's see how much world support holds for Israel once the Israeli invasion is underway.

Their main means to do so is overwhelmingly air superiority.

 

The US has sent two carrier groups, not land forces or marines.

IMO he'll abandon Ukraine before he pulls out of israel.

I don't know what hold israel holds over US leaders, but it must be significant. Sending an aircraft battle group to do what? is strange given the Gazan's have no heavy weapons to resist. Are the israelis unable to suppress a few lightly armed fighters themselves. Is the israeli military a sham that they need the US and UK to help?

 

Blinken is on Al Jazeera rattling the sabre against 2 million civilians.

 

Stop the presses- Blinken just said that aid needs to be sent to Gaza! He didn't say that it needs to be sent NOW though. Perhaps they will wait till a few more thousand Gazan's starve to death or die of wounds before they let the tons of aid waiting in Egypt through.

Or the the US could sit back and let the war in Ukraine spread to the point where the US had to once again send its youth to die in Europe.

 

While at the same time letting other nations observe that they can take territory by illegal wars of invasion.

 

Supporting Ukraine and Israel with military hardware is a lot more accepting to US voters than sending their sons and daughters to war.

You should perhaps inform yourself of the regional politics and strategic interests around both the Ukraine and Israel.

 

You might also wish to consider which other nations are watching to see if seizing territory by illegal military invasion is something that they might get away with.

 

The death of people in Gaza was an inevitable outcome of Hamas’ obscene terrorist attack on Israel, perhaps a desired outcome.

I'm on my mobile phone right now but there's an article in the New York times about how well those fleets may currently serve as a deterrent, pressure will build on Hezbollah to take action if the carnage becomes more severe. And most likely, it will become a lot more severe.
