Two Swedish nationals have been shot dead and a third person injured in Brussels, in an attack which prosecutors are treating as terrorism.

The Belgium-Sweden Euro 2024 qualifier football match being played in the city was abandoned.

Brussels is on its highest terror alert as the gunman, who appeared to have an assault rifle, remains at large.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who was on a visit to Albania, said: "Europe has been shaken."

A spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor, Eric van Duyse, urged the public to "go home and stay at home as long as the threat has not been eradicated".

He said a man claiming to be the attacker had said in a video on social media he had been inspired by the Islamic State group.

A video shows an Arabic-speaking man saying he carried out the attack in the name of God and that he killed three people.

The video and others uploaded during the attack are being verified by police, the BBC has been told.

In the name of Allah, this is a message from the soldiers of the Islamic State.

The Islamic State will remain despite your laws.

We live for our religion and we die for our religion,”

says Brussels terrorist in a FB message before killing two people.

In Belgium, it seems the Islamist danger is not taken seriously. Moelebek remains, to all intents and purposes, a nest of extremists. However, saying that in Brussels would immediately qualify you as islamophobic.

The threat from extremists is taken seriously in Belgium but, unfortunately, terrorists slip through the net.

The attacker in this instance lived in Schaerbeek, not Molenbeek, although there's no denying that Molenbeek has its' problems.

However, having grown up in what was considered at the time by many to be a crime-infested slum (Brixton), my experience is that the overwhelming majority of people are decent and law abiding.

Confirmed that suspect has died. I can't shed any tears about this news.

Yes this is good news. No need to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money on court cases, appeals, and housing him in luxury jails.

Another warning about the perils of illegal immigration, as if any more were needed.

(noticed post above too late)

Are you serious?

A Tunisian kills two arbitrary Swedish football fans in Brussels?

He is on the flight but 99% identified from a confession video on the net.

Claiming to be inspired by ISIS.

Swedes targeted as revenge for Koran burning in Sweden.

A denied asylum seeker that should have been evicted.

Same s.it everywhere.

No need to get your knickers in a twist! I wrote this when there was still very little information. "Only" two dead when he had an assault rifle just seemed a bit low for a terrorist attack!

Thankfully no-one is asking you.

Aren't you a charm?!

The reason I wrote this is because the number of victims seemed to be awfully low, thank God, for a terrorist attack. Especially when the guy had an assault rifle! Happy now?
