Thailand MoPH Weekly COVID report for June 30-July 6, 2024:

--1,377 new COVID hospitalizations, averaging 197 per day, down 1,879 / 57.7% from 3,256 the prior week

--11 new COVID deaths, down 5 / 31.3% from 16 the prior week

--735 current COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition (pneumonia symptoms), up 26 / 3.7% from 709 the prior week (dark purple)

--340 current COVID patients hospitalized requiring intubation/ventilation to breathe, up 4 / 1.2% from 336 the prior week (light purple)

The latest 1,377 tally of new weekly COVID hospitalizations, averaging 197 per day, marked Thailand's largest single-week decline of the year, following the prior week's total of 3,256 that was the country's highest since December 2022.

Still, the latest reported level of new weekly COVID hospitalizations remains almost three times higher than the number (501) at the start of the recent COVID surge in mid-March. And the latest single-week decline is only the third weekly decline in the past 17 weeks.

The latest tally of 11 weekly COVID deaths is off of the year-high total of 16 from the prior week, but more than double the weekly COVID deaths total at the start of 2024.

The latest small increases to 735 serious condition COVID hospitalized patients and 340 hospitalized patients requiring ventilation to breathe both remained just slightly below the year-high totals set last month.

Cumulative figures since the start of the year are COVID hospitalizations (32,582) & COVID deaths (183).

Of the 11 official COVID deaths for the past week, the MoPH is reporting that 6 were male and 5 female. By age, 6 were ages 70 and above, 3 were ages 60-69, and 1 each were in the age ranges 50-59 and 20-49.

The weekly new COVID hospitalization totals since this year's spring surge began in mid-March have been:

March 16 -- 501

March 23 -- 630

March 30 -- 728

April 6 -- 774

April 13 -- 849

April 20 -- 1,004

April 27 -- 1,672

June 8 -- 2,762

June 15 -- 2,881

June 22 -- 1,823

July 6 -- 1,377

By comparison, Thailand's key weekly COVID indicators to start 2024 were 664 new COVID hospitalizations and 4 COVID deaths for the first week of the year.

Compared to the first week of July in 2023, cumulative COVID deaths thus far this year of 183 are far below the 727 figure from a year ago. But cumulative COVID hospitalizations thus far this year of 32,582 are running above the 29,696 total from the same point last year.

Last week, MoPH official predicted that this year's spring COVID surge would peak by mid-July. Last year, Thailand also had a spring COVID surge that peaked in June before COVID hospitalizations declined into the fall.

Thailand MoPH Weekly COVID report for July 7 - 13, 2024:

--1,004 new COVID hospitalizations, averaging 143 per day, down 373 / 27.1% from 1,377 the prior week

--5 new COVID deaths, down 6 / 54.5% from 11 the prior week

--682 current COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition (pneumonia symptoms), down 53 / 7.2% from 735 the prior week (dark purple)

--309 current COVID patients hospitalized requiring intubation/ventilation to breathe, down 31 / 9.1% from 340 the prior week (light purple)

---------------------------------------

The latest MoPH report is finally a clear sign that Thailand's spring 2024 COVID surge is winding down after new weekly COVID hospitalizations peaked at 3,256 two weeks ago in late June, following 3-1/2 months of near relentless increases that saw those hospitalizations rise more than six-fold from mid-March levels (501).

Monday's report marked the second consecutive week of substantial declines in new COVID weekly hospitalizations, and the first time since mid-March that Thailand has seen week-over-week declines in all four publicly reported COVID indicators -- new hospitalizations, new deaths, serious condition hospitalized patients and patients requiring ventilation to breathe.

The newly reported 1,004 new COVID hospitalizations last week, averaging 143 per day, now are only about double the weekly number (501) reported in mid-March.

The latest tally of 5 officially reported weekly COVID deaths is back to the typical kind of COVID death numbers Thailand has seen during most of 2024, down from 16 that tied Thailand's year-high weekly total two weeks ago.

Cumulative officially reported figures since the start of 2024 are COVID hospitalizations (33,586) & COVID deaths (188).

Of the 5 official COVID deaths for the past week, the MoPH is reporting that all were female. By age, 3 were ages 70 and above, 1 was age 60-69, and 1 was age 20-49.

For the most recent week, the MoPH update showed improvements / declines in all four publicly reported COVID indicators -- new COVID hospitalizations, deaths, currently hospitalized COVID patients in serious condition and those requiring ventilation to breathe. For the most recent week, the MoPH update showed continuing improvements / declines in three of four publicly reported COVID indicators -- new COVID hospitalizations, currently hospitalized COVID patients in serious condition and those requiring ventilation to breathe. The one exception was a small increase in the count of weekly COVID deaths. Thailand MoPH Weekly COVID report for Aug. 11 - 17, 2024:

For the most recent week, the MoPH update showed continuing improvements / declines in all four publicly reported COVID indicators -- COVID deaths, new COVID hospitalizations, currently hospitalized COVID patients in serious condition and those requiring ventilation to breathe. The latest weekly update also marks a clear end, after five months, to the spring 2024 COVID surge that began in mid-March.

For  last week:

--435 new COVID hospitalizations, averaging 62 per day, down 84 / -16.2% from 519 the prior week

--1 new COVID death, down 3 from 4 the prior week

--295 current COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition (pneumonia symptoms), down 76 / -20.5% from 371 the prior week (dark purple)

--122 current COVID patients hospitalized requiring intubation/ventilation to breathe, down 31 / -20.3% from 153 the prior week (light purple)

---------------------------------------

The 435 reported new COVID hospitalizations last week marked the first time that weekly figure dropped below the 500 level that occurred at the start of spring 2024 COVID surge in mid-March. The latest weekly total also is about one-seventh of the recent weekly peak of 3,256 new hospitalizations reached in late June.

Cumulative officially reported figures since the start of 2024 are COVID hospitalizations (37,095) & COVID deaths (199).

The one newly reported COVID death from last week was a male between the ages of 20 and 49.

https://ddc.moph.go.th/covid19-dashboard/?dashboard=main

By comparison, Thailand's key weekly COVID indicators to start 2024 were 664 new COVID hospitalizations and 4 COVID deaths for the first week of the year -- meaning current levels are lower in both categories.

For the comparable week last year in 2023, there were 389 new COVID hospitalizations and 9 COVID deaths. That means Thailand  right now has more new COVID hospitalizations but fewer COVID deaths than one year ago.

Thailand MoPH Weekly COVID report for Aug. 18 - 24, 2024:

The latest MOPH COVID update below shows further improvements in all reported categories, and the various numbers are back below spring surge levels.

As a result for the future, as long as the various reported COVID stats remain relatively low and stable, I'll simply let the weekly MOPH reports speak for themselves, without any elaboration, explanation or comparisons.

If past history is any indicator, though, Thailand likely can expect another COVID surge toward the end of 2024 and moving into early 2025.
