My wife's status

Recommended Posts

My wife and I were married in Udorn in 1975 and the marriage was registered there.  She became a U.S. citizen in the mid '80s.  We plan on retiring in Thailand in the not too distant future; however, we would still want to make trips back to the U.S on a fairly regular basis to visit family.  My question concerns my wife's use of a passport.  Can she be considered a dual citizen and still obtain a Thai passport?

Thanks!

Dave

You don't say if she formally gave up her Thai citizenship to Thai authorities but if she did she would first have to regain it so she should talk with a Thai consulate and start paperwork if that is the case.  Thailand and the USA do allow dual citizenship now.  If she has not given up her Thai citizenship she can just obtain a current Thai passport and use that to enter Thailand, while using her US Passport to enter the USA.

FYI:  American citizenship is not required to visit the USA.  As your wife she could easily obtain a tourist visa if you were living here in Thailand.
