Thai Tourism Bounds Ahead After Post-Covid Surge

SINCE the 2021 end of the Covid-19 crisis, the Thai tourism industry has enjoyed a healthy revival and is likely to end 2023 just a little shy of 30 million visitors. While that may heighten optimism of hitting the pre-Covid total of 40 million in 2024, the Israel-Palestine war is already having a significant impact and could prove to be the biggest threat to a global tourism recovery in 2024.

Since taking office in Aug. 2023, the Thai government’s rapid-fire measures to boost tourism from the core markets of India, Russia and China have produced results. The Malaysian market, mainly cross-border traffic in South Thailand, is firing on full cylinders. And the Saudi market has roared back to life following the bilateral diplomatic rapprochement last January 2022.

Between Dec. 1-21, arrivals at the three key aviation hubs, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok, and Phuket airport, had crossed 1.5 million. After accounting for arrivals from all air, land and sea points of entry over the entire month, there is an even chance that visitors will cross the three million mark in December.

Thailand has a perishable inventory of 787,000 accommodation units of all types (hotels, guest-houses, bungalows, resorts) nationwide, mostly in the beach resorts. These units, tabulated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports as of early 2023, have to generate income every day.

in the last couple days 7 boats have sunk. maybe not the best time to use a stock photo with boats.

I read a post from a guy who survived the Koh Lipe sinking.  They asked the boat company multiple times if it was safe to go out in the sea and leave for Lanta, and they were reassured it was. It's a multiple problem.   Poor boat maintenance, a cowboy captain, and poor judgment.  None of those boats were maintained for over two years, and now they are in the water.  This is very bad PR for Southern Thailand.  Just waiting for the next boat to sink.  I don't think they will ever get their act together on water safety.

"Thailand has a perishable inventory of 787,000 accommodation units of all types..." Perishable? say what? 2 week shelf life then building collapses?

That photo looks like very very poor attempt at photoshop: bottom out of focus, wrong shadows section just sort of melts away... thank goodness not real: I would hate to be within miles of that scene if were real

"Perishable inventory consists of products that expire or lose value over time, eventually becoming worthless."

Talk about spin....

rapid fire, firing on full cylinders. Jeez. Tell the girls on Soi 4, BKK, that things are going off. Most of them are very needy. Very sad to see and then someone comes out with this "blah, blah, blah".

Oh well.

Why are you trying to make insane comments sane?  There really is no point to it.  Just point at them and laugh like everyone else.
